Key Takeaways:

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has launched a temporary virtual ramp control program designed to enhance safety and efficiency on the airport’s 34-gate apron. This initiative comes in response to the airport’s growing passenger volumes in 2022 and 2023, a spokesperson said.

The program, developed following research and collaboration with airport teams, airlines, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), involves the hiring and training of dedicated virtual ramp controllers. According to the airport, these controllers utilize technology, including cameras, aircraft tracking systems, and air-to-ground radios, to safely instruct pilots on maneuvering their aircraft around the ramp area without a physical tower.

Austin’s Aviation Department, which operates the airport, noted that this version of the program is an interim solution.

The airport is currently working with Saab Inc. to develop a permanent virtual ramp control program. This partnership was authorized by the Austin City Council in July.

At Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, American Airlines leverages a similar solution to manage its gates and ramp areas.
