Livery of the Week: Hainan Airlines

The carrier's paint scheme is distinctive among Chinese airlines.

Editor’s Note: AirlineGeeks is proud to present our ‘Livery of the Week’ series. Every Friday, a team member will share an airline livery, which can be from the past, present, or even a special scheme. Some airline liveries are works of art. The complexity associated with painting around critical flight components and the added weight requires outside-the-box thinking from designers. The average airliner can cost upwards of $200,000 to repaint, creating a separate aircraft repainting industry as a result.

Hainan Airlines, a major Chinese carrier, has long maintained a distinctive livery. The airline’s standard livery features a white fuselage with a red and yellow tail fin.

The red and yellow design symbolizes the cultural colors of the country’s Hainan Province, the airline’s home base. In addition, the carrier’s name is printed in red on the predominantly white fuselage.

In recent years, Hainan Airlines has also introduced several special liveries, including those featuring characters from the popular “Kung Fu Panda” film series.

The airline has a fleet of over 200 aircraft, including Boeing 787 Dreamliners, 737s, Airbus A320s, and A330s.
