McKinney National Airport in Texas hopes to add passenger service, according to a letter of intent from the airport.

The airport, located about 30 miles from Dallas in McKinney, sought rezoning approval from the McKinney City Council on Tuesday to bring passenger service to the airport. The Oct. 4 letter from airport Vice President Mitchell McAnally outlined the proposed project, which comes after the airport announced plans to extend its runway.

McKinney City Council members approved the rezoning request Tuesday.

The project will add a 45,000-square-foot passenger terminal to the airport, along with a 1,500-spot parking lot.

Other additions include:

  • Emergency services vehicle support space.
  • Tenant material and equipment storage containers.
  • Aircraft deicing pad.
  • Aircraft refueling operations.
  • Installation of two 30,000-gallon Jet-A above-ground fuel tanks.
  • Installation of utility infrastructure to support the facility.

The airport currently serves private and general aviation aircraft.

McKinney National Airport also plans to extend its runway from 7,502 feet to 8,002 feet. In addition, the airport is set to revamp Taxiway A, develop new corporate hangars, and construct a U.S. Customs building.

Airport management has already said that some airlines have expressed interest in serving the airport. The $70 million passenger terminal could begin operations as early as late 2026.
