India’s flag carrier confirmed this week that it will be ordering a further 100 aircraft from Airbus. This is part of Air India’s dramatic shake-up after its purchase by the TATA Group.
The move comes on the back of the Delhi-based carrier’s record-breaking orders placed last year, for 470 aircraft. That order was broken down into 20 Boeing 787s, 10 Boeing 777-9s, 210 Airbus A320/A321neos, 190 Boeing 737 MAXs, and 40 Airbus A350s – the latter of which was first delivered a year ago in December 2023.
This order was then extended in February of this year to include a further 40 aircraft – 20 Airbus A350-900s and 20 Airbus A350-1000s. It was initially reported in October as being suspected, however, those reports were claiming an order of 85 aircraft instead of the now-larger number.
The order extension detailed a further 100 aircraft, of which 10 would be Airbus A350s and the rest Airbus A320 family aircraft. This increases Air India’s total orderbook with Airbus to 344.
