San Diego International Airport’s new Terminal 1 is officially open to travelers.
The terminal, also known as T1, received its first passengers Monday night. Its first full day of operations is Tuesday.
The one million-square-foot facility replaces the old Terminal 1, which was built in 1967 and gradually became inadequate for the huge crowds passing through the airport. It was closed as of Tuesday and is set to be demolished.
The new Terminal 1 has 19 gates, 13 security lanes, more spacious seating areas for passengers, an outdoor terrace, and numerous concession stands, restaurants, and stores. The interior features public art displays, wood and mosaic design flourishes, and large glass windows to capture natural light.
“We have worked very hard with our partners, our stakeholders, and the community, and we are so excited to open up and share this Terminal 1 with people arriving and departing,” airport spokesperson Nicole Hall told KPBS-TV in San Diego.
Crews began work on the new Terminal 1 in late 2021. A second phase of construction will start in about three months.
When the project is completed in early 2028, 11 more gates will come online, bringing T1’s total to 30 gates.
Airport officials have said the entire project will cost about $3.8 billion.
