Vietjet this week converted a prior agreement with Airbus into a firm order for 100 A321neo aircraft.
The Vietnamese low-cost carrier signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus for up to 100 A321neos in June, with the option to add 50 more at a later date. The two companies finalized the deal on Thursday.
Vietjet now has 280 A321neo aircraft on order. No expected delivery date for the new block of aircraft was provided.
“This is not merely a commercial contract, but a symbol of trust, aspiration, and a shared vision for sustainable development and global connectivity,” Vietjet Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao said in a statement.
Airline leaders have said the A321neo will help them better control fuel costs and expand route offerings. The carrier flies mainly within East and South Asia but is reportedly looking at adding long-haul destinations, first in Europe, then in the U.S.
Vietjet currently operates a fleet of about 100 Airbus aircraft. It has also ordered about 200 737 MAX jets from Boeing and took delivery of the first in September.
