A Pegasus Airlines Boeing 737-800 has been involved in an accident following a landing at Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport, Turkey.
The flight, operating PC-2193, took off from Izmir, Turkey at 5.45 p.m. and arrived at around 6:20 p.m touching down on runway 06. However, TC-IZK, an 11-year-old aircraft, touched down on the 9,843 ft (3000m) runway, ran off the end, went over an airport road and impacted the airport perimeter wall.
The airframe appears to have broken up into at least three pieces. The airport has remained closed and has issued a NOTAM (Notice to Airman) stating both ILS (instrument landing system) and localizer systems for runway 06 are inoperative following the accident, indicating the aircraft went straight through the ground equipment.
The weather conditions at the time indicate the wind was blowing from 290 degrees at 22 knots, gusting to 37. This would create a tailwind of 14 knots (23 knots) and a crosswind of 17 (28 knots) whilst landing on runway 06. Thunderstorms were also reported in the vicinity of the aerodrome.
Turkey’s Transport Ministry reported there were 183 people, including six crew members, on board the aircraft. The Ministry said the aircraft landed hard, went off the runway and got stuck. According to the Istanbul Governor 157 people, were taken to hospital with injuries. One person has reportedly died.
This is not the first time Pegasus has suffered a runway excursion here at Sabiha Airport. On January 7, the airline confirmed another Boeing 737, registered as TC-CCK, arrived from Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, and overran runway 06 while attempting to land in poor weather conditions. All passengers disembarked via slides with no injuries.
