An American Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was damaged on Thursday after landing at Chicago O’Hare. According to reports on Twitter/X, the aircraft — registered as N834AA — was struck by a cargo container while taxiing to its gate.
One of the jet’s GEnx engines was damaged after reportedly ingesting the container. The aircraft remains out of service.

No injuries were reported following the incident, but the container was “destroyed,” according to reports.
“After safely landing at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), American Airlines flight 47, with service from London-Heathrow (LHR), reported damage to its engine while taxiing to the gate at ORD. The aircraft has been taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team. Safety is our top priority, and we thank our team members for their professionalism and our customers for their understanding,” an airline spokesperson told WGN9.
According to LiveATC recordings, the 787’s crew reported that a nearby tug lost its containers, and “we think we took one in the right engine.”
Emergency services were requested before all 283 passengers and 12 crew members safely deplaned.
