Frontier Airlines has continued their aggressive expansion in Florida with the announcement of three new routes and the resumption of two other routes from the Sunshine State. The Denver-based carrier has focused on expansion in Florida during the COVID-19 pandemic as leisure travel to warmer states continues to flourish. 

The airline will see the start of two new routes from Miami International Airport and one new route from Orlando International Airport, all starting in early March. Orlando and Miami will also each see the resumption of flights that have previously been suspended due to the virus.

Orlando Flight Resumptions

From its Orlando focus city, Frontier will resume daily flights to San Diego on March 7, 2021. This route was previously suspended by the airline, last flying in March 2020. The airline will also introduce a new route to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. These flights will run daily starting on March 11. While the airline flew this route up until April 2018, it is still considered a new route. 

Along with previously announced routes and current destinations, Frontier will serve 60 different destinations out of Orlando in March. 

Frontier’s Senior Vice President of Commercial, Daniel Shurz said, “Orlando continues to be incredibly popular with travelers across the spectrum, from vacationing families to adventure seekers, and Frontier offers unparalleled affordability for flyers visiting the Theme Park Capital of the World.”

Miami’s Continued Growth

Miami, one of Frontier’s fastest growing focus cities, sees yet more destinations added to its expanding route map. On top of numerous other flights starting between February and April, the Magic City will see two more new routes starting in March. The carrier will start twice weekly flights to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

On top of the new flights into the Caribbean, the airline will resume flights from Miami to Las Vegas. While this route has only been suspended since August 2020, the route will reconnect Miami with Sin City.

With regards to the Miami flights, Shurz said, “We’re thrilled to continue our exceptional growth at Miami’s convenient airport with new nonstop flights…starting right in time for spring break travel. These new flights will offer unparalleled affordability and access between Miami and two beautiful destinations in the Caribbean.”

On top of expanding its own presence into leisure destinations, Frontier will also put some pressure on American Airlines. All of the routes included in this most recent announcement, with the exception of Orlando to San Diego, see direct competition with the Dallas-based legacy carrier. Although the passenger bases for each airline are not often associated together, Frontier’s low-cost structure will place some pricing pressure on American.
