Editor’s Note: AirlineGeeks is proud to present our ‘Livery of the Week’ series. Every Friday, a team member will share an airline livery, which can be from the past, present, or even a special scheme. Some airline liveries are works of art. The complexity associated with painting around critical flight components and the added weight requires outside-the-box thinking from designers. The average airliner can cost upwards of $200,000 to repaint, creating a separate aircraft repainting industry as a result.
Have an idea for a livery that we should highlight? Drop us a line.
In 2022, American introduced a special livery on an Airbus A321, honoring recipients of the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration for valor in combat. Named ‘Flagship Valor,’ the design aims to recognize the courage and sacrifices of the fewer than 70 living Medal of Honor recipients and the many who have received it throughout U.S. history.
On the aircraft fuselage are depictions of major military conflicts and the six characteristics that embody the Medal of Honor: Courage, Sacrifice, Integrity, Commitment, Patriotism, and Citizenship.
On board the aircraft, passengers can scan QR codes to view information about the Medal of Honor and its recipients.
The livery was unveiled during a ceremony at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport on March 24, 2022, coinciding with National Medal of Honor Day. Several Medal of Honor recipients were present, sharing their stories of service and sacrifice.
The aircraft is registered as N167AN.
