Nuuk is slated to open a new airport next month and airlines are flocking to add new routes from Greenland’s capital city. In early October, United announced service between Newark and Nuuk, becoming the only U.S. carrier to serve the market.
Greenland only has two runways capable of handling large aircraft. Located nearly 200 miles away from the capital city, Kangerlussuaq is currently the only airport regularly handling Air Greenland’s A330-800neo.
The country’s national airline regularly flies the widebody jet between Kangerlussuaq and Copenhagen but plans to shift the service to Nuuk when the new runway opens on Nov. 28. Icelandair intends to add capacity to Nuuk in the coming months as well.
New Airline Plans Nuuk Service
Another new airline is lining up to serve Nuuk beginning next summer. From June 27, SAS will connect Copenhagen and Nuuk, competing directly with Air Greenland.
Flights will operate three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The new route will be operated by an Airbus A320neo aircraft.
SAS last served Greenland in 2008 with service to Kangerlussuaq, according to Cirium Diio schedule data.
