American Airlines plans to open a 40,000-square-foot Admirals Club lounge – the largest in its network – at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina.

American officials said the lounge will be located in the airport’s atrium on the mezzanine level. It will include bars, serveries, spa-style shower suites, and dedicated areas for work and relaxation.

“Designing a lounge that gives our customers more space to relax, work, and recharge is our top priority,” American Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden said in a news release. “We’re incredibly excited to bring our biggest Admirals Club lounge yet to CLT, where millions of customers pass through every year.”

Construction on the new lounge will start later this year, American said. The carrier’s other lounge spaces at Charlotte – two Admirals Club lounges in Concourse B and Concourse C/D, and a smaller, streamlined Provisions by Admirals Club lounge near Gate A1 – will remain open while work gets underway.

American said last year that it will open a new Flagship lounge at Charlotte and expand its Admirals Club footprint there, but provided few details. The airline confirmed Tuesday that the Flagship lounge is still under development.

American did not say when the new Admirals Club lounge will open to customers.
