Flight attendants at German carrier Lufthansa and subsidiary Lufthansa CityLine staged a one-day strike on Friday, forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights.

Labor union UFO said it called the strike over stalled negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement. The work stoppage is expected to end by 10 p.m. local time.

“Lufthansa is working intensively to keep the impact on our passengers as low as possible,” the airline said in a statement. “We are trying to have as many flights as possible operated by other airlines within the Lufthansa Group and by partner airlines.”

The strike is proving particularly disruptive because many Europeans are returning home from their Easter holiday, officials said.

Reuters reported Friday that around 100,000 passengers had their flights cancelled.

Lufthansa Group’s other subsidiaries, such as SWISS and Austrian Airlines, were not affected.
