Key Takeaways:

Pakistan International Airlines is in the black for the first time since 2003. The latest financial statement could be a shot in the arm to the government after it failed to privatise the airline last year.

According to Bloomberg, the Pakistani flag carrier achieved earnings per share of 5.01 rupees ($0.017) in the year that ended in December. Costs were 10.06 billion rupees in 2024, compared to 79.42 billion rupees in 2023.

In response to the pilot scandal in 2020, the Pakistani airline was banned from flying to the U.S, the European Union, and the U.K.

Struggle To Expand Service

After years of being prohibited from flying to the U.S., the struggling airline is trying to spread its wings in North America again. A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) delegation is expected to visit Pakistan in mid-April, and PIA could come under scrutiny. The airline used to operate flights to New York and Chicago before 2020.

In 2025, the airline saw a silver lining as the E.U. lifted the ban on operating in Europe. The airline resumed flight operations between Islamabad and Paris in January.

However, the airline suffered a major setback last month. The U.K. has kept its ban in effect.
