Southwest is vying to grow its number of gates at Austin–Bergstrom International Airport in Texas.

According to ABC affiliate KVUE-TV, Southwest is looking to claim new gates in the airport’s planned third terminal, known as Concourse B. The airline said it could add up to eight more gates in Concourse B, which would almost double its current 10.

“As Austin’s leading carrier with more than 40% of the market, Southwest is invested in the success of the airport and its efforts to offer world-class travel options for a world-class city,” Southwest told KVUE in a statement. “Southwest is eager to be the anchor tenant of the new Concourse B, with up to 18 leased gates upon execution of the new agreement. We look forward to closely collaborating with City of Austin staff as the terminal project moves forward.”

The airline added that it is looking to become an “anchor tenant” in Concourse B when it opens to the flying public.

The Austin City Council has the final say on gate allocations and leases.

Though Southwest does not have a hub at Austin, it is by far the largest carrier operating there and has flown over 4 million passengers in and out of Austin this year so far.

Airport officials plan to break ground on Concourse B in 2027 and expect to complete the project as early as 2030. Once finished, the building will have at least 20 gates and connect to the existing Barbara Jordan Terminal through an underground tunnel.

The airport is also in the process of developing a new arrivals and departures hall, which would open sometime in the early 2030s.
