Air Canada is set to open an Airbus A220 base in Vancouver, British Columbia, allowing the carrier to deploy the aircraft from its Western hub more efficiently. The airline’s network and revenue chief, Mark Galardo, detailed Air Canada’s plans to further expand the aircraft’s network during an Investor Day event.
The airline will open the new Vancouver base by 2026, according to the Tuesday presentation. The A220, Galardo said, unlocks several route opportunities that would otherwise be served by regional jets.
“We’re of the view that the A220 is one of the best narrowbody products in terms of customer experience, and this airplane elevates the Air Canada brand,” he said.
Air Canada expects to grow its A220 fleet to 70 aircraft in the coming years. Currently, the airline has a total of 34 A220s, with several parked due to engine issues.
“The A220’s economic profile has already proven itself in Canada, enabling us to offer city pairs right-sized for this type of airplane,” Galardo continued. “For example, we were able to launch flights from Toronto to Monterey, Mexico, and from Montreal to Austin, Texas.”

He added that the A220s allow for more U.S. expansion opportunities. “We’re looking forward to having a Vancouver base by 2026 and to be able to offer a great A220 experience across our three hubs.”
According to Cirium Diio schedule data, Air Canada’s A220s operate a handful of flights from Vancouver. More routes are slated to begin next year.

Pratt & Whitney has received Federal Aviation Administration certification for the GTF engine that will power the Airbus A321XLR aircraft
According to a Monday news release from Connecticut-based RTX – Pratt & Whitney’s parent company – the engine type certificate was updated to include the A321XLR after being granted last Thursday for the PW1100G-JM engine.
“This is an important milestone for the GTF engine program, which was the first engine to power the A320neo aircraft family,” said Rick Deurloo, president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney, in the release. “The longer range and higher payload capability of the Airbus A321XLR aircraft will provide customers with expanded route flexibility to more destinations. A321XLR operators will benefit from the GTF’s best-in-class fuel efficiency and the lowest carbon emissions available for single aisle aircraft.”
The release stated that 13 customers around the world have selected GTF engines to power 217 A321XLR aircraft. Since entering into service in 2016, GTF engines have powered over 2,100 aircraft delivered to over 80 customers worldwide.
Over 600 GTF engines on Airbus A320neo series aircraft have undergone around 300 days of inspection due to cracking in metal powder found in compressor and turbine disks.
RTX says the upcoming GTF Advantage engine will deliver 4-8% higher takeoff thrust with up to 1% added fuel efficiency. It is on track for certification and first engine deliveries next year.
“The GTF Advantage is ideally suited for the A321XLR, further expanding new route options and enabling even better operating economics,” the release stated. “The GTF Advantage engine will be fully intermixable and interchangeable with today’s model of the GTF.”
The FAA also certified CFM International’s LEAP-1A engines to power A321XLR aircraft on Oct. 2, though the approval wasn’t disclosed by the agency until Dec. 5, according to a report by The Air Current. The report stated that U.S. airlines will be able to take deliveries of the longer-range Airbus aircraft next year.

Air Canada is planning to restructure its Boeing narrowbody fleet. The Canadian flag carrier currently has around 40 737 MAX jets.
In an Investor Day presentation published Tuesday, the airline detailed its long-term fleet plans. By 2028, the carrier is slated to shift its 737 MAX fleet under the low-cost Air Canada Rouge brand.
“We will be transferring our Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to Rouge to better position the brand for our customers in the leisure segment,” said Mark Galardo, Air Canada’s executive vice president of revenue and network planning, during the event.
The company’s Rouge subsidiary operates a fleet of Airbus aircraft to leisure destinations. It was launched in 2012.
Many of Air Canada Rouge’s A320-series aircraft are nearing end of life, Galardo added. The subsidiary will eventually consolidate to a single fleet type.
“By moving the 737 MAX to Rouge, we will be able to reduce our variable CASM significantly, increase our seat count, and offer a much improved competitive tool to address the leisure market,” he continued. “Furthermore, this gives us the flexibility to operate a Vancouver base with the airplane, improving our competitiveness and our range ability in this market and in Western Canada at large.”

Air Canada’s 737 MAX 8s fly under the mainline brand on a wide array of routes, including some trans-Atlantic flights. The airline has 12 more 737 MAXs on order, most of which are set to enter service next year.
The carrier’s 737 MAX aircraft can accommodate up to 169 passengers with 16 business class seats.
According to the presentation, the 737 MAX will “enhance [Rouge’s] leisure competitiveness,” including new destinations. By 2026, the company will open a Vancouver, British Columbia, base for the low-cost brand.

Iceland’s flag carrier, now in its 87th year, has grown exponentially, especially over the last ten years. The airline’s international medium-haul fleet has consisted completely of Boeing aircraft, with the Boeing 757 being the backbone of the carrier for a long time, and then the Boeing 737 MAX, along with the small sub-fleet of three Boeing 767-300s.
The airline recently retired the 757-300 from its fleet, which are going on a wet lease to Fly Khiva, a Uzbekistan airline that will launch its first-ever passenger flights with Icelandair’s former aircraft.

But, with the Boeing 757 starting to show its age, the airline needed a new alternative to the aircraft, Icelandair decided to venture into the Airbus sector. While this is the first Airbus aircraft in the Icelandair livery, it isn’t the first time they’ve flown Airbus jets.
Now, with its very own Airbus aircraft, TF-IAA, an Airbus A321LR, which was delivered to the airline on December 3, 2024, made its first-ever scheduled passenger flight on the morning of December 10, from its main hub at Reykjavik/Keflavik to Stockholm in Sweden.

Day of the Flight
I arrived in Iceland on a redeye flight from the East Coast of the United States on the morning of the flight. After customs, the gate was easy to find as it was the first one when you came up from getting passports stamped, and the celebrations had already started.
At the gate, a screen alternated between Icelandic and English that welcomed the first Airbus aircraft to the airline’s fleet.

There was also a table with macaroons and champagne for all passengers, as well as juice for those who didn’t want champagne. They didn’t make any special announcements during the boarding process or at the gate.

Before boarding started there was also a picture with all of the crew members of this inaugural flight up at the gate.

I managed to get on right at the beginning of the boarding process so I could get a quick walk-through of the cabin, and I saw the brand new seats up in the Saga cabin, as well as the extra legroom seats, and then of course the economy cabin. It was also helpful getting a walk-through to see the configuration, considering there was a row towards the back of the airplane that was missing a window, in this case, row 25.

I was sitting in the airline’s Saga cabin, and waiting for me at my seat was a pillow and a blanket along with Icelandic water. The seat was definitely different than the Saga seats on their other aircraft, and even had wings near the head so people could lean on them for sleeping. There was also a leg rest which is a new addition.

One of the first things you notice when you sit in the seats is the much bigger IFE screen, which is a first for any airline in the world.

There was so much excitement during the boarding process, including some Icelandair executives, Panasonic employees, and media as well. They made a handful of announcements onboard about what this new Airbus aircraft meant for the airline, and what a historic event this was for the future of the carrier. We pushed back from the gate and took to the skies around eight in the morning, and being that it was December in Iceland, it was still completely dark out.

Once we got in the sky, they brought champagne and macaroons for everyone onboard, not only those in Saga class, because it was a special flight. They also made more special announcements when we got into the air, including talking about how important this is in the airline’s history.
New IFE Screens
Regarding the new IFE system, in Saga, it’s 16 inches, and in Economy, it’s 13 inches. Icelandair’s A321 is the first airline, and aircraft in the world to have ‘Astrova,’ which is a new IFE system by Panasonic Avionics.

The new system also had a Bluetooth feature so you could pair your wireless headphones to the screen. On the bottom of the screen was the power outlet, FA call button, a button to turn on lights above your seat, and volume. On the left side were two headphone ports, and two USB-C ports as well.
The screen was super in-depth and you could look at Icelandair’s history, movies, TV, and probably the most detailed inflight map I’ve ever seen. If you looked closely at the map, you could even see the water moving. You could tap on cities and learn more facts and information about them, and it even points out landmarks like mountains.

You could also look out the ‘windows’ and the ‘cockpit’ on the screen as well, but perhaps the most fun aspect was the heads-up display.

About an hour after takeoff, the sun finally started coming up and you could see the wonderful sharklet with the Icelandair logo on it.

Inflight Meal
I ordered the hot option, which came with chicken sausage, potatoes, eggs, fruit/vegetable/cheese bowl, some bread, and rice pudding for dessert. The meal was really good and even had more macaroons afterward for an additional treat.

As the flight went on I continued to look at all of the cool features of the seats. Other hidden features included a coat hook on the back of the seats in Saga, a phone/small device holder on the tray table, a power outlet near your waist, and a third headphone jack on the front of the seat.

The sun continued to rise, although not completely as we were pretty far north in December, and I had some wonderful views of the mountains in the Scandinavian region as we flew over.

The crew regularly came through the cabin throughout the flight to see if anyone wanted more water or other drinks. I continued to enjoy not only the shiny new IFE system but also the spectacular views beneath.

As the flight was under 2.5 hours long, it didn’t take long for us to descend into Stockholm. Just before landing, they brought a special gift to all passengers in Saga class; a keychain that said Airbus A321, and on the flipside it had the airline’s logo.

Also, during our final descent, they had bright colorful lights shown throughout the cabin that were meant to mimic the northern lights. The aircraft did not yet have WiFi when I took this flight as it was still troubleshooting, but when I rode the same aircraft back to Iceland, two days later it did work.

The airline currently only has a single Airbus aircraft, TF-IAA, but more of them will be delivered in the coming months with the second one currently in the Icelandair livery at the Airbus factory in Hamburg.
Currently, Icelandair operates one A321 aircraft, flying from its home in Iceland to Stockholm and Copenhagen. But as more aircraft are delivered this winter and into the busy summer peak season, it will begin operating more routes with the aircraft type.

LAX Airport at Work To Host the 2028 Olympics
One major airport that eschews this rule is Los Angeles, where the biggest carrier is Delta with 24% of domestic flights and 20% of international connections.

Most major airports around the world see the majority of flights operated by just one carrier: for example, London Heathrow, the largest international hub in the world, is dominated by British Airways which has exclusive use of Terminal 5 and operates 50% of international connection from the West London airport.
And if we look at airports with a large share of domestic traffic, these percentages become even higher: at Atlanta Hartsfield, three flights out of four are performed by “local” carrier Delta, and at Dallas/Fort Worth and Charlotte, American is responsible for almost 90% of domestic traffic.
One major airport that eschews this rule is Los Angeles, where the biggest carrier is Delta with 24% of domestic flights and 20% of international connections, according to the OAG Megahubs Report 2024.
This situation makes it particularly challenging for the management of the airport to handle communications with all their tenants, especially when major upgrades are in progress as has been the case for the past few years at LAX.
The Monorail to Fight Traffic
During the Routes conference in Bahrain, AirlineGeeks had the opportunity to meet with Doug Webster, Deputy Executive Director for Operations for LAX, which is part of the Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) portfolio including also Van Nuys Airport, one of the busiest general aviation airports in the United States.
“There is a lot going on at LAX at the moment, and the next big thing coming up is the Automated People Mover (APM) which is scheduled to be completed between the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026. Traffic is everyone’s problem in LA, our central terminal area can become very congested, especially in the evening. Once the people mover is completed there will be a connectivity to the metro, that is now being served by buses, but of course buses cannot avoid traffic,” he said.
The APM will have three stops in the middle of the central area, which is now occupied by parking buildings, and will connect the terminal buildings at LAX with the Consolidated Rental Car Facility and the LAX Metro/Transit Center, providing also an intermediate stop that will serve as remote curbs. “It will be possible to do drop-offs and pick-ups there without the need to drive to the central terminal area,” explained Webster. “There will still be the possibility to drive all the way to the terminals, but during rush hours it will be a 10-minute people mover ride versus whatever time it may take to go through the central terminal area.”

The Consolidated Rental Car Facility has been open since mid-October with Avis and Budget relocating there via buses. “We needed them to relocate because the areas they were occupying are being redeveloped. The facility was not designed to function with buses, it was supposed to be fed by the train, so we are going to evaluate how things go with Avis and Budget see what kind of traffic we can manage using buses and make a decision in a few months we are adding other car rentals sooner rather than later.”
Terminals Change Their Names
In 2017, during the month of May, more than 15 airlines operating at LAX had to undergo a major terminal reshuffling. One of the main relocations involved the biggest carrier at LAX, Delta, which moved from Terminals 5 and 6 to Terminals 2 and 3.
During the next three years, the names of all terminals will be rationalized in order to facilitate wayfinding for passengers. At the moment, the central structure of the airport is the Tom Bradley International Terminal, which is generally identified as Terminal B and therefore it is not in line with the numerical denomination of all other terminals.
“When Delta redeveloped Terminal 2 and 3, it all became one building,” Webster added. “So the terminal occupied by Southwest will remain Terminal 1, then the current terminal 2 and 3 will be renamed as Terminal 2; the Tom Bradley Terminal will become Terminal 3, and then all other buildings on the south side of the structure will maintain their names of Terminal 4, 5, 6 and 7, with the latter incorporating also the pier that is currently denominated as Terminal 8.”
In addition to that, all piers will be assigned a letter, and gates will be identified by the letter of the pier and the number indicating the specific gate. This will allow each gate to have a unique identification.
“From a customer perspective it will be more intuitive as it follows the international standards followed also at other airports around the world, but it going to be a change from the numbering system we have used for the last 60 years,” he continued.

Of course, the most important deadline that LAX has to deal with in the near future is July 13, 2028, which is the date of the Opening Ceremony for the XXXIV Olympic Games that will be hosted by the “City of Angels.” Millions of athletes and visitors will descend on Los Angeles and for most of them LAX will be the first impression of the Olympic City about to host the Games.
“During the summer we spent some time with Aeroports de Paris to learn from their experience,” continued Webster. “What is important is to make sure that all constructions are done by the time the Olympics arrive. It’s not necessary to build lots of new facilities, we just need to focus on running a clean and efficient operations. So there will be no race to build something new and shiny, but all developments will need to be done in time. For this reason, we expect the renovation project at Terminal 4, the American Airlines terminal, to be completed by 2027. If there is something that could risk not being completed before the Olympics, it will be postponed.”

United to Leave Western Airport
United is set to end service to an Idaho airport early next year. The Chicago-based airline has served the airport since 2021.

United is set to exit an Idaho airport early next year. The Chicago-based airline has served the airport since 2021.
In February, the carrier will no longer serve Lewiston, Idaho. The town is roughly 270 miles north of Boise.
A United spokesperson told the Lewiston Tribune that the airline’s last Lewiston-to-Denver flight will end on Feb. 1. This route previously operated on a daily basis with a SkyWest Embraer E175.
“United will continue to serve Idaho with service to Boise, Idaho Falls and Sun Valley,” the spokesperson said. “We’re working with impacted customers to help them make alternative travel arrangements.”
United stopped short of providing a reason for the market exit.
Delta continues to serve Lewiston with daily E175 flights to both Seattle and Salt Lake City.

Tanzania’s flag carrier has found its way up on the E.U.’s air safety list. The news comes despite the fact that the airline currently doesn’t fly to any European Union member state destinations.
Like the U.K. and U.S., the European Union has a list of airlines that are banned from flying to and from its member states, as well as into their airspaces. Sometimes individual airlines wind up on the list, but it can often be any airline from a certain country due to safety standards.
For example, all airlines from Kyrgyzstan are banned from flying to the E.U. because of the country’s safety regulations.
Why Air Tanzania?
In a statement released by the EU on Friday, December 13, regulators stated they had refused to grant Air Tanzania a Third Country Operator authorization, which is essential for flying into EU airspace.
This comes after an extensive review by aviation safety experts of member states in Brussels last month, regulators said. The review found Air Tanzania to not be meeting safety standards for unspecified reasons.
While Air Tanzania currently doesn’t operate in the region, this is still a setback for the airline should they hope to operate there in the future. The airline has recently been attempting to renew its fleet, ordering new Boeing 787-8s, 737 MAXs, and Airbus A220s.
However, while talking to The Citizen, Tanzania’s chief government spokesperson seemed confident that the ban would be lifted at some point in the future. He claimed that it was “a process which takes time,” but that “E.U. safety experts are expected to visit Tanzania soon to complete the vetting process.”

Spirit Slashes More Service

Spirit plans to cut more routes next year. The ultra-low-cost carrier – which filed for bankruptcy in November – has aggressively scaled back capacity into 2025.
The beleaguered airline expects capacity to be down in the mid-teens on a year-over-year basis. Fourth-quarter capacity will be down by approximately 20%.
According to Cirium Diio schedule data, Spirit is slated to axe more routes. These include Baltimore to Tampa, Florida; Las Vegas to Salt Lake City, Utah; Orlando, Florida, to Salt Lake City. and Orlando to St. Louis.
The carrier also plans to end an international route from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Guayaquil, Ecuador, in February 2025.
Service between Baltimore and Tampa along with Las Vegas to Salt Lake City will end in December and March 2025, respectively. The other routes were completely wiped from the airline’s schedule.

American is slated to restart service on a mainline route for the first time in roughly seven years. The flights will begin next year.
According to the most recent Cirium Diio schedule update, the Fort Worth, Texas-based airline plans to resume flights between Los Angeles and Pittsburgh. The new route will be offered as a daily service.
The airline’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft are planned to operate the 2,136-mile route. Flights will start on April 4, 2025.
While Pittsburgh is served from the carrier’s other hubs, Los Angeles has remained the exception with no non-stop service for several years. American last served the Los Angeles-Pittsburgh market in February 2017.
Currently, ultra-low-cost carrier Breeze also serves the route.

More Resuming Routes
American plans to resume a handful of routes next year, including several flights from its Chicago O’Hare hub. These include Chicago to Boise, which will begin in June 2025.
In addition, the carrier plans to add flights between Chicago and Spokane, Washington, a route last served in 2021. Envoy Air Embraer E175s will operate the daily service beginning in June.

During the past week, commercial air transport celebrated an important milestone in its history. Exactly 80 years ago, on Dec. 7, 1944, at the Stevens Hotel in Chicago, 52 states signed the Chicago Convention, the document that established the general principles regulating commercial air transport up to this day.
The Convention became effective on April 4, 1947, when it was ratified by the 26th signatory country, and later that year the United Nations formed the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a specialized agency responsible for the international coordination of all norms and principles regulating air transportation across the world.
On Dec. 5, the 36 members forming the ICAO Council held an Extraordinary Session in the very same room of the Chicago Hilton (formerly Stevens Hotel) where the diplomatic conference was held in 1944, while World War II was still in progress. The ICAO President, Salvatore Sciacchitano, in his speech reminded all the delegates of the significance of the Chicago Convention: “Eighty years ago, as the Second World War still raged, 54 States came together in this very city to imagine a different future – one where aviation would serve as a bridge between nations rather than an instrument of conflict.”
“Those delegates in 1944 could not have imagined the scale and complexity of today’s aviation system. Yet they created a framework flexible enough to accommodate technologies they could never have dreamed of, and robust enough to guide aviation’s development through decades of unprecedented change,” he said.
The convention has been revised eight times so far, the last of which was in 2006, and it is supported by 19 Annexes that provide guidelines and technical specifications for every aspect of commercial aviation, from operations to communications, from airport infrastructures to safety management.
Currently, there are 193 signatories to the Convention, which is all members of the United Nations except Liechtenstein (because it does not have an international airport, but it has delegated Switzerland to enter the agreement on its behalf), and with the addition of the Cook Islands.
The Birth of the ‘Freedoms of the Air’
The Convention on International Aviation — as the document signed in Chicago is officially called — constitutes the backbone of today’s structure of commercial aviation.
Article 1 of the Convention establishes that “every State has complete and exclusive sovereignty over the airspace above its territory.” This constitutes the basis for what is established in the following article and especially in Article 6, which states that “no scheduled international air service may be operated over or into the territory of a contracting State, except with the special permission or other authorization of that State, and in accordance with the terms of such permission or authorization.”

This was one of the key outcomes of the Conventions. In fact, there were two opposing schools of thought going into the meeting: the “traditional” view, supported by most European and colonial powers, who regarded traffic rights as a national asset and as a way to protect national security; and the “open skies” view, led by the United States, who preferred a much more open approach that would allow every airline to enter any market worldwide as they saw fit.
The Chicago Convention established the basis for the need of bilateral “Air Services Agreements” that would be needed for any international flight connecting two countries, as well as which conditions airlines had to satisfy in order to be recognized as airlines of a certain State. These Air Services Agreements are still very much part of today’s landscape in international commercial services, regulating routes, frequencies, and sometimes even capacity and fares.
In Chicago, only the first five so-called “Freedoms of the Air” were included in the Air Services Agreements. These are:
First Freedom: The right to fly over a foreign country without landing;
Second Freedom: The right to refuel or carry out maintenance in a foreign country without embarking or disembarking passengers;
Third Freedom: The right to fly from one’s own country to another country;
Fourth Freedom: The right to fly from another country to one’s own;
Fifth Freedom: The right to fly between two foreign countries on a flight originating or ending in one’s own country (e.g. if a U.S. airline were to fly Atlanta-Tokyo-Seoul)
The remaining freedoms are those more commonly used nowadays due to more liberal Air Services Agreements
Sixth Freedom: The right to fly from a foreign country to another (or between two places in a foreign country) while stopping in one’s own country for non-technical reasons (e.g. Lufthansa transporting a passenger from Paris to Athens via Frankfurt, or Air Canada transporting a passenger from Honolulu to Denver via Vancouver)
Seventh Freedom: The right to fly between two foreign countries where the flights do not touch one’s own country (e.g. Ryanair flying between Madrid and Rome)
Eighth Freedom: The right to fly inside a foreign country with or without continuing to one’s own country (e.g. Wizz Air flying between Rome and Milan)
The Ownership and Control Clause
The Air Service Agreements template produced in Chicago were mainly two-freedom or five-freedom agreements, and each of them contained a provision that has been tying the aviation industry’s hands for almost a century.
In Section 5 of two-freedom agreements and in Section 6 of five-freedom agreements it was stated:
“Each contracting State reserves the right to withhold or revoke a certificate or permit to an air transport enterprise or another State in any case where it is not satisfied that substantial ownership and effective control are vested in nationals of a contracting State, or in case of failure of such air transport enterprise to comply with the laws of the State over which it operates, or to perform its obligations under this Agreement.”
In other words, if airline XYZ of country A is operating a service between country A and country B under an Air Services Agreement, it may have its license to operate that service revoked if country B is not satisfied that the airline is “substantially owned and effectively controlled” by individuals or entities from country A.
This provision has blocked most cross-national mergers and acquisitions in the airline industry, leading to a much higher fragmentation of the market and reducing efficiencies of scope and scale for many operators.
Other Articles
Chapter III of the Conventions contains articles pertaining to the conditions to be satisfied to determine the nationality of an aircraft.
Chapter IV deals with air navigation and air transportation facilities, with Article 24 being particularly important because it establishes the exemption of duty of everything that is being carried on an aircraft when performing an international flight.
Chapter V pertains to the conditions to be fulfilled with respect to aircraft, while Chapter VI sets some international standards and recommended practices to be followed.
The remaining chapters deal with the establishment of ICAO and its functions, as well as provisions regarding airports and air navigation facilities.
