China Eastern’s Fleet Expansion: The Arrival of Its Sixth COMAC C919

On May 28, China Eastern officially received its sixth COMAC C919 from the manufacturer, registration number B-919G, with more expected in the near-term.

On May 28, China Eastern officially received its sixth COMAC C919 from the manufacturer, registration number B-919G. The carrier ferried the jet from Shanghai’s Pudong Airport to Shanghai’s Hongqiao Airport, located on the other side of the city. This C919 is the first of the 100 jet orders from China Eastern to COMAC, and the delivery date was on the first anniversary of C919’s commencement of commercial service. 

The newly arrived COMAC C919 is set to commence commercial operations on May 30. It will serve the route between Shanghai’s Hongqiao International Airport and Beijing’s Daxing International Airport. China Eastern’s C919 fleet also serves Chengdu and Xi’an.

Future Deliveries

According to the new release by COMAC, the seventh C919 is already in the final stage of testing and will be delivered to China Eastern soon. Based on the annual reports of Air China and China Southern, both state-owned airlines will receive their C919s this year. We can speculate that the eighth C919 may be its first delivery to Air China or China Southern.

Where Is the C919 Going to Fly Next?

China Eastern is flying a COMAC C919 charter flight from Hong Kong to Shanghai on June 1 for a Hong Kong Youth Camp. This charter flight will be the first C919 commercial flight outside of Mainland China.

As the C919 fleet grows, China Eastern may likely expand its C919 services to more cities. Shenzhen and Guangzhou in the Guangdong province will likely be the candidates for potential C919 destinations, as China Southern, the upcoming operator of the jet, will operate its new aircraft from the carrier’s bases in the Southern province of China, Guangdong. Service there will help local airports to gain experience with the new jet.

On the international front, we currently have no confirmation on any international routes that COMAC’s C919 may serve, as its certification with EASA and the FAA is still ongoing. However, COMAC has flown the prototype jet to Southeast Asian nations such as Singapore, Cambodia, and Vietnam for demonstrations.

Emirates Integrates New Turbulence Monitoring Solution

By integrating the IATA Turbulence Aware Platform with Lido mPilot, a mobile navigation solution, Emirates empowers pilots with real-time turbulence data.

Emirates has announced its participation in the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Turbulence Aware Platform. This move positions Emirates as the first airline to integrate the platform with Lido mPilot, a mobile navigation solution from Lufthansa Systems.

By combining the vast turbulence data pool of the IATA platform with Lido mPilot’s advanced navigation functionalities, pilots will gain access to accurate, up-to-the-minute turbulence information. This empowers them to plot optimal flight paths, minimizing turbulence exposure and enhancing overall flight efficiency.

Strengthening Safety Standards

The airline says its dedication to safety extends beyond mere participation. It has equipped over 140 aircraft with the necessary software to contribute valuable turbulence data to the platform automatically. This data will be anonymized and integrated with existing data, further enriching the platform’s resources. Additionally, all new Emirates aircraft, including the Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 family, will be prepped to contribute data, bolstering the platform’s global reach.

“Actively participating in IATA’s Turbulence Aware Platform and equipping our pilots with the latest technologies like Lido mPilot underscores our unwavering commitment to safety, efficiency, and passenger comfort,” stated Captain Hassan Alhammadi, Divisional Senior Vice President of Flight Operations at Emirates, in a press release. “Furthermore, contributing data to the platform strengthens industry knowledge, allowing for the development of even more effective turbulence management strategies.”

Collaboration for Industry-Wide Benefits

Industry leaders are applauding this innovative partnership. “Obtaining accurate and real-time turbulence data is crucial for mitigating its adverse effects on air travel,” said Frederic Leger, Senior Vice President of Commercial Products and Services at IATA. “The cooperation between IATA Turbulence Aware, Emirates, and Lufthansa Systems will significantly improve the quality and quantity of real-time data available, ultimately leading to smoother and safer air travel for all.”

Andreas Medlhammer, Product Owner of Pilot Charting Apps at Lufthansa Systems, further emphasized the benefits. “By integrating IATA Turbulence Aware data into Lido mPilot, Emirates grants pilots access to comprehensive real-time turbulence information. This empowers them to make informed decisions for optimal flight path selection and fuel efficiency, ultimately contributing to increased operational efficiency and passenger satisfaction.”

Adopting the new system comes on the heels of a recent incident where a passenger died following severe turbulence on a Singapore Airlines Boeing 777-300ER. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

Congress Shells Out Millions to Aid Pilot Shortage

This additional funding is part of the FAA's Aviation Workforce Development Grants program, which provides support to aviation-related education institutions.

Congress will distribute $80 million over the next four years to assist with pilot workforce development. These funds – included as part of the recent FAA Reauthorization Act – represent a substantial increase from the $25 million allocated in 2018.

This additional funding is part of the FAA’s Aviation Workforce Development Grants program, which provides support to aviation-related education programs. The $80 million in pilot development grants is part of a broader $240 million pool intended to also recruit aircraft mechanics and aviation manufacturing workers.

According to Yahoo Finance, an early version of the bill included $120 million in total funding, but that number was doubled with an amendment introduced by Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock. “This is a long-term issue,” he said during an interview.

‘The Pilot Shortage Myth’

The roughly $55 million in new funding comes as the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) – the world’s largest pilots union representing over 77,000 aviators – says the pilot shortage “isn’t real.” The labor group even goes as far as saying that the shortage is a so-called “myth,” instead pointing fingers at airline leadership.

“So, although we don’t have a pilot shortage, we do have a shortage of airline executives willing to stand by their business decisions to cut air service and be upfront about their intentions to skirt safety rules and hire inexperienced workers for less pay,” ALPA says on its website.

Despite the rhetoric, regional carriers say they aren’t quite out of the pilot supply woods yet with some offering lucrative bonuses for direct-entry captains. In a recent presentation, the Regional Airline Association (RAA) – a trade group – said, “We can’t believe we have to say this, but an abrupt, temporary hiring disruption — driven entirely by an abrupt aircraft delivery disruption — is not the same thing as fixing the pilot shortage.”

Some in Washington also believe the so-called pilot shortage isn’t over. During a press briefing at Austin’s Bergstrom airport on Tuesday, Texas Senator and Senate commerce committee ranking member Ted Cruz said he ‘absolutely’ still believes there’s a shortage, adding that Congress should have done more.

“So this bill…takes modest steps in the direction of addressing the pilot shortage, but I wish we had been able to take more, and I’m going to continue working to take even bolder steps,” he added.

Cruz strongly supported raising the airline pilot retirement age from 65 to 67, which failed after a narrow party-line vote. ALPA and other pilot unions opposed the increase.

“The pilots union has an interesting position on this. It’s one of the very rare circumstances I know of where a union picked some members over other members,” Cruz said at the briefing.

Diversity Push

With the bill now passed, the FAA will be tasked with distributing the funding as grants to flight schools and other institutions. Sen. Warnock said he pushed to include provisions in the bill to distribute some of the funding to ‘underrepresented populations’ in the aviation sector.

“I’m making the business case for diversity,” Warnock told Yahoo Finance. “It’s in our enlightened self-interest to find that talent and create a robust pipeline so that they can become pilots.”

Airbus A319, King Air Involved in Washington-DCA Close Call

The Boston-bound A319 was forced to reject its takeoff at over 80 knots as the King Air was landing on the intersecting runway.

An American Airbus A319 and a King Air aircraft – registered as N250AA – were both involved in a Wednesday morning incident at Washington’s Reagan National Airport (DCA). As first reported by AvHerald, the Boston-bound A319 was forced to reject its takeoff at over 80 knots as the King Air was landing on an intersecting runway.

The Airbus was operating flight AA2134 at the time and was cleared for takeoff on Runway 1 while the King Air was landing on Runway 33. According to air traffic control audio, the tower controlled canceled flight 2134’s takeoff clearance after noting the conflict.

The landing King Air was instructed to go around, but said they were unable due to already being on the ground. A spokesperson from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the agency is investigating the incident.

“An air traffic controller cancelled the takeoff clearance for American Airlines Flight 2134 because another aircraft was cleared to land on an intersecting runway at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The event occurred around 10:30 am local time on Wednesday, May 29,” the agency said.

This close call follows a string of similar incidents at DCA, including last month when a Southwest 737 MAX was told to cross a runway with a JetBlue E190 already on its takeoff roll. The JetBlue flight was forced to reject the takeoff at approximately 30 knots.  Last year, a Republic Airways Embraer jet crossed in front of a departing United aircraft at the airport.

Runway 1/19 at DCA is the nation’s busiest single runway with 819 average daily scheduled operations, per data from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA).

After the incident, flight 2134 returned to the gate for a maintenance inspection. It departed just over four hours later.

JetBlue to Open New San Juan Crew Base

JetBlue announced plans to open a new crew base for both pilots and flight attendants in San Juan, Puerto Rico later this year.

JetBlue announced plans to open a new crew base for both pilots and flight attendants in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The new base is expected to open by the end of 2024 and create over 400 jobs in San Juan by 2025, according to the carrier.

The New York-based airline recently expanded service from San Juan to more destinations, including Providence, Westchester, and Cancun. Carrying an average of 40 daily flights scheduled in San Juan later this year, JetBlue is the airport’s largest operator.

“We’re so excited to base hundreds more crewmembers right here in San Juan, where we are proud to be the largest airline with plans to grow even more,” said Warren Christie, JetBlue’s chief operating officer, in a press release. “The new crew base will support our operation as we grow and benefit the local economy in a place we are proud to call home.”

The new crew base will station up to 120 pilots and 325 inflight crew members in San Juan, which the airline says will improve its service and operations throughout the Caribbean and beyond.

“This great announcement from JetBlue is a testament to the potential of our Island and the growth we have had in the tourism sector over the past three years,” added Puerto Rico Governor Pedro R. Pierluisi.

The carrier has a long history in the U.S. territory that spans over two decades. In 2020, JetBlue opened a maintenance base in San Juan.

Earlier this year, ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) Frontier announced that it too would open a San Juan crew base. With plans for 90 pilots and 200 flight attendants, Frontier’s new domicile is set to open next month.

Joining San Juan, JetBlue also has crew bases in Boston, Fort Lauderdale, New York, Orlando, and Los Angeles.

Qatar Airways On the Way to Starlink Onboard Connection

Starlink onboard internet offers advantages over its competitors in speed and coverage as some airlines from around the world race to implement it.

In the company’s latest press release, Qatar Airways reiterated its goal to install Starlink internet connectivity onboard the carrier’s aircraft.

Implementation On The Way

In October 2023 ,Qatar Airways announced an agreement with Starlink to provide seamless and complimentary Wi-Fi onboard the carrier’s fleet. Now the airline is providing further details about the deal.

The first eye-catching part is the service being complimentary for passengers. It was already announced with the initial release and this is similar to the deals Starlink has with other carriers.

Two further details are completely new and specific to Qatar Airways. The carrier announced the planned date of the introduction and the fleet that will get the technology first.

“Three Boeing 777-300s will be the first aircraft in Qatar Airways’ fleet to be upgraded with Starlink’s game-changing, ultra-high-speed, low-latency Wi-Fi onboard by the last quarter of this year,” the airline said.

Powerful Technology

Satellite internet connectivity creates such a buzz in the aviation world because of the promise of performance. Most of the currently implemented solutions are based on air-to-ground connectivity. That means they rely on an antenna attached to the aircraft that catches the signal from cellphone towers on the ground.

Starlink business branch called Starlink For Aviation outlined quite remarkable performance indicators that should be achievable with its solution. The official website of the provider says that the technology reaches 40-220 MBPS download speed per terminal and 8-25 MBPS upload speed per terminal with a latency of 99 milliseconds.

This means that gaming enthusiasts could be playing multiplayer games onboard that are usually very sensitive to latency. Simultaneously, airlines providing ir-To-ground connectivity usually do not mention performance as the download speed is usually limited to a few MBPS.

Multiple aircraft types are supporting Starlink or are on the way to being certified, including the Airbus A321neo, A220, A320, and A330, along with the Boeing 737, 757, 787, and 777. Aside from the main commercial aircraft, there are also multiple smaller airliners and private jets ready to be equipped.

Other Early Adopters

In February this year, Hawaiian Airlines debuted Starlink onboard its fleet as the first airline in the world. It is particularly significant as per the carrier’s geographical location flying routes over the Pacific Ocean which means other satellite connectivity providers are lacking coverage in those areas.

Other airlines reporting to be on the way to introducing the technology are Air New Zealand, ZIPAIR, and airBaltic. The latter has already reported on performance testing onboard one of its Airbus A220s.

South African Will Not Enter Equity Partnership With Qatar Airways

Earlier this month, Qatar Airways made headlines announcing that it would be entering an equity partnership with an airline based in the southern part of the African continent.

Since that announcement, there has been speculation regarding potential airlines Qatar Airways might be investing in. Some have thought that the Middle East-based carrier might be seeking a stake in South Africa’s national carrier, South African Airways.

Not South African Airways

South African Airways’ Interim CEO, Professor John Lamola has confirmed that South African Airways is not about to enter into a transaction with Qatar Airways.

Speaking at an aviation summit in Johannesburg on May 22, Lamola stated that South African Airways was looking for a partner, but one who would respect the airline’s mission, according to Tourism Update.

“We are South Africa’s national carrier… and we’re looking for a partner that will respect the mission of SAA,” Lamola said.

SAA Seeks Capital Injection

Following South African Airways’ collapsed private equity deal with the Takatso Consortium, Lamola highlighted some of the qualities that the airline’s board was looking for in a potential strategic partner.

The most important one is for SAA to remain as a state-owned airline, with its focus on serving the country. Another characteristic of any potential equity partner, explained Lamola, was a capital injection.

“SAA requires a financial injection to recapitalise SAA in its second phase, where we will be moving into the modernisation of our fleet in line with the global requirements of decarbonisation,” he said.

Equity Investment for Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways is 100% owned by the Qatar government. It currently flies to 31 destinations across the African continent.

However, the airline has an appetite for growing its network in Africa. Acquiring equity in another African airline will allow Qatar Airways to boost its presence on the continent.

This other airline will complement RwandAir’s operations, enabling enhanced connectivity in the East, West, and North of Africa.

“We are at the final stage of an equity investment in an airline in the southern part of Africa,” said Qatar Airways CEO, Badr Mohammed Al Meer, speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha on May 15.

He noted that the deal is likely to be announced in the coming weeks, according to Reuters

Growing African Presence

Qatar’s interest in establishing a hub and network in Rwanda started in 2019 when it expressed interest in buying a stake in RwandAir. The ailine will have a 49% share in RwandAir, a deal that has taken several years to complete.

Qatar’s national carrier has also channeled USD $1,3 billion into the construction of Rwanda’s new Bugesera International Airport as part of a plan to develop a regional aviation hub.

Private Operators Authorized to Offer Regular Passenger and Cargo Flights in Ethiopia

The Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA) granted approval to local private operators, allowing them to provide regular passenger and cargo flight services.

On May 14, 2024, the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA) granted approval to local private operators, allowing them to provide regular passenger and cargo flight services. According to the ECAA’s press release, this authorization is crucial because it will “enable the air transport sector to contribute to the overall development of the country.” The goal is to “provide safe and guaranteed services” to investors and “encourage many investors to enter the sector.”

While existing regular domestic flights primarily connect regions to Addis Ababa, this new permission for private operators aims to enhance connectivity between different regions, fostering economic and social interaction. In addition to this, the tourist destinations that are being built in different parts of the country have been given the attention of the government and will have a significant role in making the environment accessible to visitors.

Despite Ethiopian Airlines’ success as the largest airline in Africa, the private sector in the Ethiopian aviation industry has not flourished. General aviation in the country is still in its infancy, with approximately twelve private airlines operating in the sector. Notably, none of these private operators offer scheduled flights; instead, they focus on charter flight services. Currently, Ethiopian Airlines remains the sole provider of scheduled flight services on domestic routes.

The ECAA is committed to changing this narrative. Over the past two years, the authority has taken transformative steps. The civil aviation authority has issued a directive urging private investors to construct more than 21 airstrips and helipads in various parts of the country, especially in areas that lack accessible air transport. “These will contribute greatly to the economic growth of the country when they are completed and start to be in service.”

Investors must first secure an investment license from the Ethiopian Investment Commission, while the ECAA conducts technical evaluations, safety audits, and grants operational permits. These developments are expected to significantly contribute to the country’s economic growth once they are completed and operational.

According to Times Aerospace Magazine on March 21, 2024, Getachew Mengistie, the Director General of ECAA, emphasized the positive impact of aviation. He highlighted how air transport creates job opportunities and generates essential foreign currency for Ethiopia. “To avail equitable air transport services all over the country,” Mengistie stated, “need to have the required air transport infrastructure.”

Bolstering Airport Development

Currently, Ethiopia boasts 22 airports, with four of them certified to operate as international airports. However, civilian heliports remain nonexistent, and there are only a few airstrips. The development and administration of airports have been exclusively carried out by the federal government.

ECAA operating under the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Government of Ethiopia, achieved significant financial success as announced on April 14, 2024. The agency accumulated an impressive sum of 722 million birr (equivalent to $12.66 million USD) generated through a combination of various services, licenses, and incomes.

How Pilots Predict Severe Turbulence

The Singapore Airlines flight begs the question of how pilots, dispatchers, air traffic controllers, and other stakeholders can predict turbulence and avoid it.

Following the Singapore Airlines severe turbulence encounter last week, many are concerned about other potential events in the future. Significant turbulence events are not particularly uncommon – a Hawaiian Airlines flight made headlines last year, and a Southwest flight was forced to divert due to turbulence earlier this spring – but the Singapore Airlines flight brought the first turbulence-related fatality in years.

This flight begs the question of how pilots, dispatchers, air traffic controllers, and other stakeholders can predict turbulence and avoid it. Detecting turbulence can be difficult, and not all turbulence is predictable, but there are ways to identify where it could occur.

Convective Activity

The biggest indicator of turbulence is convective activity. When unstable air is allowed to rise – by a lifting force such as a front or a mountain range – its movement becomes what we call turbulence. Pilots can identify where convective action is occurring to pinpoint areas where they could experience turbulence.

The easiest way to identify areas of convective turbulence is to look at clouds. When clouds become vertically developed – when they extend high into the sky in puffs – it is likely that turbulence is present because air needs to be pushed upwards considerably to allow moisture to condense into towering clouds. The same is true with heavy, showery rain: such comes about when air is forced upwards enough to create rain. In heavy storms, the turbulence is compounded by downdrafts that force rain to the surface, passing through the updrafts that allow the storm to develop in the first place.

Mountain Waves

Another place where turbulence is common is over mountain ranges. Mountains provide a natural lifting mechanism for unstable air, allowing air to rise and move around more strongly. This extra movement is often most noticeable the closer you are to the mountains, which is why mountainous areas often have the bumpiest takeoffs and landings. These are commonly referred to as mountain waves.

Pilots have additional tools to help them predict turbulence. In the United States, the Aviation Weather Center – part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) – creates aviation-specific weather reports and forecasts to help crew identify weather patterns conducive to atmospheric instability.

Most important are inflight aviation weather advisories called AIRMETs, SIGMETs, and Convective SIGMETs. AIRMETs apply mostly to smaller aircraft; they pertain to activies such as areas of low clouds and visibility and moderate turbulence. SIGMETs and Convective SIGMETs apply to all aircraft regardless of size.

Convective SIGMETs are the most applicable for finding areas of extreme turbulence. They may be issued for things such as lines of severe thunderstorms called squall lines; tornadoes; embedded thunderstorms; surface winds greater than 50 knots; and more. There are also third-party apps that help crews and even passengers, predict where the smoothest rides will be. They take weather and pilot reports to make assessments and predictions about where the smoothest rides will be, allowing for safer, more comfortable trips. They also use real-time data to cross-check the accuracy of their systems.

In addition, pilots are able to use a reporting system – called PIREPs – to warn others of their observations, including icing and turbulence. Crews use these reports and predictions to make decisions about which routes to take, which altitudes to fly, or even whether to fly at all.

Not every bit of turbulence is predictable, though. There is another type of turbulence called “clear air turbulence” that can seemingly appear out of nowhere and will not show up on radar. This type of turbulence tends to take pilots by surprise and does not provide any possibility of avoidance. This is a big reason why pilots and cabin crew tell passengers to fasten their seatbelts whenever seated, even if the seatbelt sign is off: if turbulence suddenly takes an aircraft by surprise, passengers reduce their own risk if they are already strapped in.

Severe and extreme turbulence events are still exceedingly rare in the context of how many commercial flights operate each day.

Further Strike Action to Impact European and U.K. Travelers

A strike by air traffic controllers at Orly airport near Paris has resulted in the cancellation of 70 percent of scheduled flights this past weekend. The French civil aviation authority ordered the airport to make the cuts after the UNSA-ICNA (Syndicat National Autonome des Ingénieurs du Contrôle de la Navigation Aérienne) labor group called the strike action. Le Monde reported the UNSA-ICNA stating ‘”The managers at Orly continue their penny-pinching and shopkeeper accounts which will quickly lead to our teams being understaffed” by 2027.’

The industrial action is the second in a month affecting French air traffic management resulting in the French Transport Minister stating: “I deplore the behavior of some local level agents who refuse to recognize the legitimacy of a majority accord and are making passengers pay the price.” The statement was in reference to an agreement made between the largest labor group, the SNCTA (National Syndicate of Air Traffic Controllers), and airport authorities.

The strike action is the latest to affect the aviation industry in Europe and the United Kingdom and comes two months ahead of Paris’ hosting of the Olympic Games and at the start of the English school holiday mid-term break.

U.K. travelers may also be impacted at the end of the mid-term break by scheduled industrial action by Border Force workers. The strike notices have been issued for May 31 and June 1-2, the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday when most Britons return from the holiday break.

An estimated 500 workers of the PCS (public and commercial services) union are due to take part in the strike called to protest the 250 Border Force staff projected to lose their jobs as a result of changing work patterns. The main impact will be a lack of staff checking passports for inbound travellers resulting in delays and disruptions.

The PCS union general secretary Fran Heathcote said: “We are keen to resolve this dispute but the Home Office (U.K. government department) must first put something on the table for our members to consider. The Home Office has said it is ‘open to discuss’ a resolution but it only responded to our request for a meeting after we threatened further action. Until it comes back with changes to the roster that will benefit our members then the dispute will continue.”

A Home Office spokesperson said: “We are disappointed with the union’s decision to strike but remain open to discussing a resolution with the PCS union. The changes we are implementing will bring the working arrangements for Border Force Heathrow staff in line with the way staff work at all other major ports, provide them with more certainty on working patterns, and improve the service to the traveling public.”

Yahoo! News reported that the three-day strike action ‘will be followed by three weeks of action short of a strike, including staff working to rule and a ban on overtime running from 4 until 25 June.’ The Home Office stated: “We have robust plans in place to minimize disruption where possible, but we urge passengers to check the latest advice from operators before they travel.”
