Japan Airlines Increases Flights to Hawaii

Effective March 19, 2023, Japan Airlines is increasing its flights to Hawaii by adding extra operations to its services from Tokyo/Narita (NRT), Osaka/Kansai (KIX) and Nagoya/Chubu (NGO) to Honolulu (HNL). The company has yet to resume its service to Kona (KOA).

According to Cirium, Japan Airlines will have a mid-March offering of 15,664 weekly seats between Japan and Hawaii, a 63.7percent recovery from 2019 levels. Currently, the Japanese airline offers twice-daily flights between Tokyo/Haneda (HND) and Honolulu (HNL) on Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

Increases from one weekly frequency to three weekly flights.

Tokyo/Narita (NRT) second service

Increases from one weekly frequency to three weekly flights. JL 784/ JL 783 services will continue to operate daily on Boeing 787s.

Narita – Honolulu Flight JL 8786 NRT 19:45 – HNL 07:50 Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
Honolulu – Narita Flight JL 8785 HNL 14:30 – NRT 18:45+1 Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Services from Osaka, Nagoya and Narita (JL 8786/JL 8785) will be operated on Boeing 767-300ER aircraft with a capacity of 199 seats in two classes (24 Business Class/175 Economy).

According to data compiled through Cirium, Japan Airlines is the second largest carrier in the Japan-Hawaii market in terms of seats per seat kilometers (ASK), behind only Hawaiian Airlines. In addition, the segment between Tokyo and Honolulu is one of the most relevant transpacific routes in the United States: according to U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) data, 2,094,089 passengers flew between the two cities.

ITA Airways Reopens Data Room, But Only to Lufthansa

Italy’s Ministry of Economy re-opened ITA Airways’ Data Room to Lufthansa, but this time the Swiss group Mediterranean Shipping Company, better known as MSC (the world’s leading cargo line operator) won’t be among those authorized to check the Italian airline’s most confidential data.

In the past month, the Swiss and German groups were aiming to buy 100 percent of the airline, but despite the alternating governments — Draghi and Meloni — this solution has not always been preferred by the Italian state, which still wants to keep a minority share — around 20%.

In recent weeks, the Certares fund, which was willing to maintain a strong public presence in ITA Airways’ shareholding, seemed to be favored for this very reason. However, now everything again seems to point toward Lufthansa but given the latest changes at the top of the italian airline, we expect more twists and turns.

A Renewed Intercontinental Focus

In recent days, the Italian flag carrier has signed all the planned commitments for fleet growth for 2023. Next year, 39 new generation aircraft will enter the fleet, including nine wide-body Airbus A330-900s and 30 narrow-body aircraft. 

Fleet development will result in a 73% increase over 2022 in capacity in terms of seats offered per kilometer (Available Seat Kilometer – ASK) on the entire network, mainly due to the larger capacity on long-haul routes, registering growth of 107%. The entry of the new aircraft will allow the removal of older generation aircraft from the fleet, significantly lowering the average age of the fleet, as well as the resulting reduction of 1.3 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, according to airline data. Already by the end of 2023, the fleet will be 50% new generation, reaching a total of 96 aircraft.

New intercontinental destinations are scheduled to open in 2023 with direct flights operated from Rome Fiumicino to the U.S., with San Francisco and Washington, starting in the summer season, and from next November, new flights to South America, to Rio de Janeiro.

Moreover, with the entry of the A321neo, ITA Airways will plan new Middle Eastern destinations: Riyadh, Jeddah and Kuwait City, expanding its network and strengthening its connectivity through its Rome Fiumicino hub.

A Green Goal

ITA Airways aims to be the greenest airline in Europe in 2026. This is a goal that can be achieved not only with a younger and more efficient fleet but also with other initiatives and collaborations. 

ITA Airways was the first airline in Italy to use sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs). ENI, an Italian multinational company active in the field of energy production and commercialization, already produces SAFs, which is now the fastest mean to significantly contribute to the decarbonization of aviation. 

A few days ago, together, the two Italian companies launched the “Joule Discovery Lab” project to increase the entrepreneurial skills of their employees to build a new model of sustainable development of the Italian industrial system. Within the Lab, projects will be presented to both ITA Airways and ENI management with the possibility of being “incubated” by the teams of the two companies through an acceleration path that will continue in the coming months.

American (Re)-Activating CRJ-200 in Several Regional Markets

In April 2020, American Airlines retired one of the most unanimously disliked aircraft by passengers: the CRJ-200. Known for its cramped cabin and low windows, most passengers either love or hate this small aircraft.

Delta announced it would retire all CRJ-200s by December of 2023, and over a year ago United announced the retirement of all single-cabin aircraft in 2026 of which they operate two: the Embraer E145 and the CRJ-200. American, on the other hand, operates a large number of Embraer E145s and is now un-retiring the dreaded CRJ-200, going against the industrywide trend to rid themselves of some of the most cramped airplanes in the skies.

Over the summer of 2022, Air Wisconsin, a regional jet operator based in Appleton, Wis., announced that it would be moving operators from United Express back to American Eagle. It wasn’t more than five years ago when they made the switch from American to United, and the company now seems to be going back.

At this current point in time, it looks like Air Wisconsin will resume flying the CRJ-200s under American Eagle in April of 2023. There are nine destinations that have now been scheduled to receive the American Eagle CRJ-200 starting at some point during the month of April 2023:

Appleton, Wis.; Huntsville, Ala.; Milwaukee, Wis.; Kalamazoo, Mich.; Dayton, Ohio; Flint, Mich. Waterloo, Iowa; Manhattan, Kans.; and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, are the cities that currently are scheduled to start CRJ-200 service under the American Eagle brand, all of which will be served from the airline’s hub at Chicago O’Hare.

As it is still almost six months away, there is a good chance that these schedules will change and other cities will be added to the list.

Air Mauritius is once again deploying its wings in Cape Town, South Africa from Wednesday (November 16) until January 15, 2023.

After a forced two-year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the relaunch of this route is in line with increased demand. Air Mauritius will operate two weekly flights to Cape Town, South Africa.

The two weekly flights between Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius and Cape Town Airport will be operated by the Airbus A350-900 and the Airbus A330-900neo. These two airplanes can accommodate 28 passengers in business class and 298 and 288 in economy class respectively.

The service between Cape Town and Mauritius has several advantages, including facilitating business travel and offering connections via Mauritius to Europe, India, Southeast Asia, Australia and the islands of the Indian Ocean.

It also creates additional freight capacity on the route, allowing essential goods to be transported between Cape Town and Mauritius. The resumption of Air Mauritius operations in Cape Town also reaffirms the strategic importance of South Africa on its network.

City of Cape Town mayoral committee member for economic growth James Vos, says the twice-weekly flights between Cape Town and Mauritius signify the value and strength of the connection between the two destinations and will contribute to the growth and recovery of the tourism sector.

Cape Town International Airport on Friday took to its Facebook page to officially welcome back Air Mauritius.

“We officially welcomed back Air Mauritius this week! Air Mauritius last operated this direct Mauritius to Cape Town route on 17 March 2020. They will now operate twice per week on a Tuesday and Sunday with just under approximately 6 hours of flying time between destinations.”

The airline currently operates once daily flight between Mauritius and OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

Unlike its daily flights to Johannesburg – relaunched in January – where it competes with low-cost FlySafair and South African Airways, with whom it shares its codes, its Cape Town route will have no other competitor.

Other destinations in focus

Since October 31, Air Mauritius serves Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with two flights per week. Also, since November 1, the company has also been providing two weekly flights to Perth, Australia.

In addition, a codesharing partnership with Air India started on August 17, allowing Mauritius nationals to travel to seven other destinations in India, including Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Goa, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Calcutta.

The Air Mauritius fleet consists of four Airbus A350-900s and two A330-900neos, sufficient to serve the destinations. However, with an increase in frequency, it is better to be prepared. This is the reason why Air Mauritius intends to lease two new airplanes. The national company will take delivery of an A350-900. There are also three ATR 72s that mainly serve Rodrigues.

Air Canada Resumes Thirteen Caribbean and South American Holiday Destinations

With the start of the northern winter season, Air Canada continues to restore its leisure network with the resumption of thirteen holiday routes from Toronto (YYZ) including beach destinations in Mexico, Florida, and the Caribbean, as well as other popular locations such as Panama and Peru. Early in the first quarter of 2022, the airline was forced to suspend multiple services because of an increase in COVID-19 cases.

More flights to the Sunshine State

The airline resumed operations from Toronto (YYZ) to Sarasota (SRQ) and West Palm Beach (PBI) reinforcing its presence in the state of Florida. It is also the only airline to offer non-stop service from Canada to both destinations.

  • Toronto (YYZ) – Sarasota (SRQ): daily flights on Airbus A321/A319 operated by Air Canada Rouge.
  • Toronto (YYZ) – West Palm Beach (PBI): daily flights on Airbus A220-300 and A321.

According to data obtained through Cirium, the Canadian company will offer 89,928 weekly seats between Canada and Florida. The resumed routes will complement services to Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Orlando (MCO), Miami (MIA), Fort Myers (RSW) and Tampa (TPA).

Strengthening connectivity to the Caribbean

Air Canada is bringing back six Caribbean destinations, most of which were suspended earlier this year due to health restrictions caused by the increase in COVID cases.

The Canadian carrier is the only airline to offer nonstop service between Canada with SVD and SKB. According to Cirium, Air Canada will offer 55,272 weekly seats to the Caribbean this winter.

Increased offering of sunny destinations in Mexico

The Canadian carrier resumed three sunny services in Mexico, increasing its network to seven destinations in the Aztec country.

According to data obtained through the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC), Air Canada mobilized 218,618 passengers and 771,062 tons of cargo in the period between January – September 2022 in 1,673 operations. The company is currently the third largest airline operator in this segment with a market share of 18.4 percent.

  • Toronto (YYZ) – Zihuatanejo (ZIH): Saturday on Boeing 737 MAX 8.
  • Toronto (YYZ)- Cozumel (CZM): Monday, Thursday and Sunday on Airbus A319 operated by Air Canada Rouge.

According to Cirium, the airline will offer 42,632 seats per week between Canada and Mexico. These services are complemented by operations to Cancun (CUN), Mexico City (MEX), Puerto Vallarta (PVR) and San Jose del Cabo (SJD).

According to data from the CAIA, between January and September of this year, 2,016,998 passengers have flown between Canada and Mexico, with an occupancy factor of 78.91 percent. After the sanitary flexibilization between both, the market between these nations has recovered significantly, with the arrival of the winter season many Canadian travelers will be looking for sunny destinations for their vacations.

Resumption of services in Central and South America

After more than two and a half years, Air Canada resumed operations from Toronto (YYZ) to Panama City (PTY) and Lima (LIM). The company is the only Canadian airline to offer non-stop service to the United States.

United Airlines Begins Operations in Colombia with its Boeing 737 MAX

Last Monday, United increased the capacity of its operations in Colombia with the introduction of the Boeing 737 MAX. For the first time, the airline will operate with this model between the United States and South America.

The first Boeing 737 MAX 8 service was performed in an aircraft registered under registration number N27271, which took off from Newark Airport (EWR) at 18:04 local time and landed at El Dorado International Airport (BOG) at 23:08, after five hours and four minutes.

According to data obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, United will have a mid-November offering of 6,412 weekly seats between the U.S. and Colombia, this represents an 8% increase over 2019 levels.

Boeing 737 MAX 8s will replace Boeing 737-700 Next Generation Boeing 737-700s on routes from Newark (EWR) and overnight flights from Houston – Intercontinental (IAH) to Bogota (BOG). UA 207/ UA 206 services will continue to operate with the regular aircraft.

Colombia is one of the Latin American markets with the greatest recovery for the company.

British Airways Increases Flights to Portland and Pittsburgh

British Airways is increasing its flights to Portland, Oregon (PDX) and Pittsburgh (PIT) for the 2023 summer season. The British carrier continues to strengthen its offering in the United States from London Heathrow (LHR), the company’s most important intercontinental market.

Portland, Oregon (PDX)

In June of this year, British Airways inaugurated its 26th destination in the United States with an unprecedented service between London Heathrow (LHR) and Portland (PDX) with five flights a week on Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. From March 26, 2023, the airline will increase its operations to daily flights.

  • London/Heathrow – Portland Flight BA 267 LHR 14:45 – PDX 16:34
  • Portland – London/Heathrow Flight BA 266 PDX 18:25 – LHR 11:50+1

British Airways will also increase capacity on this route by changing aircraft from Boeing 787-8s to Boeing 777-200ERs with a capacity of 272 seats in three classes (48 Business Class/40 Premium/184 Economy). This represents an increase of more than 25% in seating capacity.

  • Between April and May, service operations will vary and the airline will offer between 5-6 flights per week, and from June it will return to daily operations.

Currently, the British airline is the only carrier to offer non-stop flights between Oregon and London. The British Airways network on the West Coast of the United States offers: Los Angeles (LAX), Portland (PDX), Seattle – Tacoma (SEA), San Francisco (SFO), San Jose (SJC) and San Diego (SAN), it is the European carrier with the most destinations in this segment.

Pittsburgh (PIT)

British Airways is strengthening its Pennsylvania operation, increasing its operations to Pittsburgh (PIT) from four to six weekly flights during the 2023 summer season. According to data obtained through Cirium, the company will have a capacity of 2,568 weekly seats between London and PIT, this represents a 50% increase in the supply of seats on this segment.

Mexico: Viva Aerobus Inaugurates Flights Between Toluca and Puerto Vallarta

On November 14 Viva Aerobus inaugurated its flights between Toluca International Airport (AIT) and Puerto Vallarta (PVR). This is the company’s fourth domestic destination inaugurated at AIT this year, the low-cost airline is the second airline to offer service from the three airports in the Mexico City metropolitan area.

“We celebrate that Viva Aerobus continues to grow from Toluca Airport, where we have a modern infrastructure and warm service to serve more and more passengers. Thus, working together, airport and airline, we strengthen the tourism and commercial sector of our state and, consequently, promote regional development,” said Hugo Alberto Delgado Ortega, General Director of AIT.

Flight VB 9144 was operated in an Airbus A320neo registered with registration number XA-VIR, which took off from Toluca (TLC) at 10:47 local time and landed at Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR) at 11:49, after one hour and one minute. According to the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC), 1,040,224 passengers and 405.4 tons of cargo were moved between Puerto Vallarta (PVR) and the Mexico City metropolitan area in 7,503 operations during the period January – September 2022.

Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR) receives non-stop services from the three main airports in the Mexican capital, which include Benito Juárez (MEX), Felipe Angeles (NLU) and Toluca (TLC).

According to AFAC data, the low-cost airline is the second largest air operator in the domestic market in terms of passengers transported. Between January and September of this year, the company has mobilized 12,447,264 domestic passengers and 6,325.6 tons of cargo in 75,173 operations.

“Now, for the convenience of all travelers in the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico, they can now choose whether to fly non-stop to Puerto Vallarta from AIT or AICM, always in new aircraft and at low prices so they can make the most of any trip, whether for pleasure or business,” said Walfred Castro Novelo, Director of Communications of Viva Aerobus.

Viva Aerobus schedule in Toluca

According to data compiled through Cirium, Viva Aerobus will have 18,228 weekly seats in Toluca (TLC) in December, making it the second-largest airline in this destination.

  • Puerto Vallarta (PVR): daily flights.

All routes are operated in Airbus A320neo aircraft with a capacity of 186 seats in a single-class configuration.

Three Canadian Carriers Resume Flights to Puerto Rico to Expand Summer Offering

With the start of the 2022/2023 boreal winter season, three Canadian airlines resumed operations to Puerto Rico. Carlos Mercado Santiago, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC), celebrated the arrival of these airlines at the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU).

“The restart of this service during the high season of our tourism industry increases the supply and accessibility of our destination, providing a magnificent opportunity to continue to expand Puerto Rico’s projection in international markets and thus increase the contribution of Tourism to the economic development of the Island,” said the PRTC director.

The combined economic impact of Air Canada, WestJet and Air Transat air operations is estimated to exceed $14.4 million and add more than 23,000 seats between November 2022 and April 2023.

On November 12 Air Canada and WestJet were the first Canadian airlines to resume operations between Toronto (YYZ) and San Juan (SJU). The first flight was AC 1252, operated by an Airbus A220, which took off from Lester Pearson Airport (YYZ) at 08:49 local time and landed at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) at 14:17, after four hours and 28 minutes.

In addition to its operations between Toronto (YYZ) and San Juan (SJU), Air Canada plans to add another service to Puerto Rico from Montreal (YUL) starting December 3; WestJet will continue to operate a single route; and Air Transat will resume operations to Luis Muñoz Marín Airport starting December 20. All scheduled operations between Puerto Rico and Canada for next December will comprise an offer of 2,156 weekly seats through all Canadian carriers.

United Resumes Flights to Cuba After More Than Two Years

United resumed operations between the United States and Cuba after a suspension of more than two and a half years. The airline will provide the only non-stop service between the state of Texas and the Caribbean nation.

The carrier’s last operation in Cuba, was on March 28, 2020, on a service between Havana (HAV) and Houston (IAH) on Boeing 737-800 Next Generation. The company currently offers most of its services through its regional subsidiary United Express.

According to Reuters, United had asked the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for a new deadline to start operations in Cuba, due to the logistical problem at José Martí International Airport (HAV) and the visa of its crew members.

On November 14 Flight UA 3542, which was operated in an Embraer E175 registered with registration number N722YX, took off from Newark-Liberty International Airport (EWR) at 10:46 local time and landed at José Martí International Airport (HAV) at 13:47, after three hours and five minutes.

On the other hand, Flight UA 6306 was operated by United Express, the aircraft took off from George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) at 11:22 local time and landed in Havana (HAV) at 14:42, after three hours and six minutes.

United is the fourth U.S. carrier to offer non-stop service to Cuba and the second airline to connect the Cuban capital with the New York metropolitan area.

United will have an offer of 2,308 weekly seats between Cuba and the United States in twenty-eight operations. The Chicago-based airline is the third largest airline operator in this segment in terms of seats per kilometers offered (ASK).
