The closure of Russian airspace to Western carriers, combined with the closing of airspace due to armed conflicts in the Middle East, has made it much harder for Scandinavian airlines to travel to Asia.

In one of the biggest airline alliance stories of 2023, SAS, acquired by Air France-KLM, set out on a path to move from the Star Alliance to SkyTeam.

Following two other major consolidation moves in Europe, Air France-KLM, a member of SkyTeam, will take an equity stake in SAS Scandinavian Airlines.

SAS has signed an engine purchase and services agreement with CFM. The agreement confirms the airline’s use of LEAP-1A engines on its A320neo family. This comes as part of SAS’ fleet upgrade program, which aims to improve efficiency and sustainability.
