How a 1926 Law Affects U.S. Airline Workers Today

The implications of the RLA are wide-reaching and many deviations have been made over the years to halt or hamper strike actions and lockouts.

Considered to be one of the most heavily regulated industries, aviation – and specifically airlines – are subject to a wide variety of both international and domestic legislation and regulations. As commercial aviation took off in the U.S., so did the checks and balances surrounding it, particularly on safety and competition rules.

Often buried among the plethora of aviation laws and regulations are those having to do with labor, specifically the Railway Labor Act (RLA). Arcane to many, the RLA has broad jurisdiction over railroad companies, but also airlines, along with their respective labor unions.

Enacted in 1926, the RLA was initially sculpted around railroads before being expanded to include airlines in 1936. The act is administered by the National Mediation Board (NMB), an independent federal agency. Like many other appointments in U.S. federal agencies, the board – comprised of three members – is appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate.

At its core, the RLA advocates for collective bargaining, empowering both carriers and unions to engage in negotiations aimed at reaching collective bargaining agreements (CBAs).

A document from the Department of Transportation states: “The purposes of the RLA are to avoid any interruption of interstate commerce by providing for the prompt disposition of disputes between carriers and their employees and protects the right of employees to organize and bargain collectively. The RLA imposes a duty on carriers and employees to exert every reasonable effort to make and maintain collective bargaining agreements, and to settle all disputes, whether arising out of the application of such agreements or otherwise.”

Despite several heated negotiations between airlines and labor unions, there is an extensive process before a strike can take place as outlined in the RLA. Due to this, strikes among U.S. airline workers are rather rare. One of the most notable strikes was in 1993 with American Airlines flight attendants, one week before the busy Thanksgiving holiday.

Following an 11-day strike, President Bill Clinton brokered a deal to get the company and the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) to submit to binding arbitration, per the Washington Post.

Roughly 30 years later to the day, 99.47% of APFA-represented flight attendants who submitted ballots in a recent strike authorization vote opted in favor of a strike. The APFA joins an ever-expanding list of U.S. airline unions seeking a strike.

Reading beyond the headlines, though, the bargaining process is strictly governed by Section 6 of the RLA. This section outlines the extensive measures that must be taken in order to remedy a dispute. Here are the key components:

1. Initiation of Negotiations

When either the union or carrier seeks to amend the existing CBA or, in layman’s terms, the contract, the initiating party must serve written notice to the other party at least 30 days before the desired changes are intended to go into effect. Once notice is given, the parties are obligated to engage in good-faith negotiations.

All CBAs that fall under Section 6 have an amendable date; therefore, Section 6 CBAs do not expire but only change through letters of agreement (LOAs) or contract negotiations. A CBA may also have an “early opener” clause that allows either party to initiate negotiations before the amendable date.

2. Mediation

If either party feels direct negotiations have reached an impasse, the party may request a referral of their dispute to the National Mediation Board (NMB). The NMB appoints a mediator to facilitate discussions, encourage compromise, and help the parties find common ground.

As an example, the APFA has been in this mediation phase since late June 2023 and is seeking to be released as of Friday, Nov. 17. Southwest Airlines pilots – represented by SWAPA – are also in mediation alongside the company. SWAPA also recently asked to be released from mediation but was denied.

3. Presidential Emergency Board

If mediation fails to result in an agreement, and if either party requests it or the NMB deems it necessary, the President of the United States (POTUS) may appoint a Presidential Emergency Board (PEB).

The PEB is established within 30 days of the President’s appointment and has 30 days to investigate the dispute and make recommendations. Neither party can exercise self-help measures such as strikes or lockouts during this period.

4. Cooling-Off Period

Following the PEB’s recommendations (or at the end of the mediation process if the NMB released the parties from mediation and did not refer the dispute to the President), there is a mandatory cooling-off period. This period is generally 30 days, during which neither party is allowed to exercise self-help.

5. Additional Mediation

If an agreement is not reached by the end of the cooling-off period, the NMB may offer additional mediation assistance for an indefinite period of time.

If the dispute remains unresolved after additional mediation, the President may appoint a new PEB to investigate the matter. The PEB has 30 days to issue recommendations. This step of additional mediation must be unanimously agreed to by all parties.

6. Congressional Action

In extremely rare cases where all other efforts fail, Congress may pass legislation to address the dispute and impose a settlement. Congressional intervention is a last resort and is used very rarely.

Congress has stepped in a handful of times for railroad strikes, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. However, it has not leveraged any sort of emergency legislation for the airline industry in recent years.

7. Strike or Lockout

If none of the previous steps results in an agreement, and if the cooling-off period expires, the parties have the right to engage in self-help measures. The union can strike and the carrier can lock out employees.

In the case of a flight attendant strike, carriers have historically chosen to continue operating flights by hiring and training replacements or using other qualified personnel to fill in for striking employees. 90% of American Airlines’ flight attendants went on strike in 1993.

Of course, the implications of the RLA are wide-reaching and many deviations have been made over the years to halt or hamper strike actions and lockouts. The RLA can be found within 45 USC Ch. 8.

U.S. Aviation Initiatives Celebrated at APEC Meeting in San Francisco

Moves toward the broader use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) took center stage at APEC meeting in San Francisco. The target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050 was set by ICAO.

The civil aviation industry’s goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 took another step forward this week at the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) meeting in San Francisco. Boeing, the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) launched ‘an initiative to catalyze the development and use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) among APEC member countries. Boeing, the DOT and the FAA will sponsor the initiative in APEC’s Transportation Working Group

Chris Raymond, Boeing’s Chief Sustainability Officer said: “Industry studies and data tell us that SAF is essential to meet aviation’s net zero commitment, but we need more of it. This initiative helps deepen the partnerships that we have had for years with several countries to advance SAF. We will foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among APEC economies, all in pursuit of a safe, and more sustainable aviation future.”

According to Boeing, ‘SAF certified for use today can reduce lifecycle CO2 up to 85 percent and holds the greatest potential to reduce aviation’s emissions over the next 30 years.’  The target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050 was set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). However, one of the challenges airlines have faced is the cost and access to SAF with the fuel only accounting for 0.1% of current global jet fuel demand.

Touted by the White House

The project was one of a number of initiatives touted by the White House as contributing over $50 billion of investments into APEC economies. With U.S. businesses being the largest source of foreign direct investment in APEC economies the Biden administration cited other aviation initiatives as contributing to the success of the region. These included United Airlines’ network expansion in the South Pacific as the largest in aviation history and Flexport, in partnership with CHOOOSE, launching an aviation decarbonization solution. United Airlines was also celebrated for its transport of humanitarian aid in the APEC region.

United’s network expansion in 2023 resulted in an increase of 40 percent more flights to Australia and New Zealand from the U.S. Last month the airline started flying on one of its Star Alliance partner Air New Zealand’s main routes, Auckland to Los Angeles (LAX). From Nov. 29, Brisbane, Australia will gain a connection to LAX and in December United will become the only carrier to fly from LAX to Christchurch (CHC), the largest city in New Zealand’s South Island, a route that Air New Zealand last flew in 2006. This will bring to 66 the total number of United flights in the Northern Winter schedule from the U.S. to Australia and New Zealand.

The carrier also added new non-stop flights to Hong Kong, Tokyo, Taipei, and Manila and resumed services between Beijing and San Francisco (SFO). The White House also announced that due to government engagement with China, United would be able to increase services to Shanghai from SFO.

AirBaltic to Become the Largest European A220 Operator

The carrier has already took deliveries of some of the last remaining units of its outstanding Airbus A220 order. Nearing IPO, the management decided to take on more planes to build a growth story around them.

Airlines and other industry participants are bidding more and more amazing announcements at the Dubai Airshow this year. AirBaltic, an airline very active in marketing activities in cooperation with Airbus, has chosen this time to announce the extension of its Airbus A220 order.

Adding to an already sizeable fleet

In a significant pivot in the carrier’s history, in 2016, airBaltic took a first step to streamline its fleet to a single type. The decision was made to place the bets on the up and coming new aircraft on the market – the Bombardier CS300, soon to become the Airbus A220. Fast forward 44 deliveries later, after becoming the launch customer, airBaltic is one of the biggest Airbus A220 operators in the world.

In 2023, during the world-renowned Dubai Airshow, the next chapter of that story has been written. Airbaltic has placed a firm order for another 30 units of the A220 family.

“This day marks a significant milestone in the history of airBaltic – our plans for the first time ever to operate a fleet of 100 aircraft by 2030. For almost seven years already, the Airbus A220-300 has been the backbone of our operations and has played an integral role in the international success story of airBaltic”, said Martin Gauss, President and CEO of airBaltic. “Being the global launch customer of the Airbus A220-300, we continue to be a proud ambassador of it. We are grateful to our partners at Airbus for the incredible support, trust, and collaboration over these years.”

Hybrid… in a few ways

Airbaltic is often called a hybrid airline. Something in-between a full-service carrier of the likes of Lufthansa or British Airways and a low-cost carriers like Ryanair or easyJet. Fact of the matter is that its operating model is very close to the latter with distributed operations and a single-type fleet. Still though, the carrier uses Global Distribution Systems to sell tickets as well as offers tickets with a connection in its home base in Riga.

A new dimension towards being a hybrid airline arose after the pandemic slowdown. AirBaltic has chosen a safety net in its operations by wet-leasing part of its fleet to other carriers. This acts as a steady income stream employing part of the fleet on the outside markets. Last year this strategy put airBaltic in a peculiar situation as the carrier, grappling with its own engine-related problems, had to wet lease from other carriers to maintain its scheduled operations.

Nevertheless, this way of doing business lessens the stress being put on the airBaltic home-market of the Baltic states – Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. At the same, it brings necessary stability and helps put the incoming aircraft to work.

The coming Initial Public Offering

Being one of the airlines that accepted state aid in the downturn of the pandemic, airBaltic plans to return the injected funds through an IPO. The carrier is already taking steps on that path, with the schedule to complete it somewhere between 2024 and 2026.

From this point of view, the placed order becomes a growth story for the management to build and potential investors to buy.

Boeing’s 747 From the Flight Deck

Pilots have long held a deep connection to the airplane that Joe Sutter and his team built. We talk to some of them as the describe their experiences flying the Queen of the Skies.

The final 747 — a 747-8 model — left the production line for its inaugural flight on February 1 this year. The crew traced a unique pattern in the sky: a queen’s crown underlaid by the numbers “7-4-7.”

Pilots have long held a deep connection to the airplane that Joe Sutter and his team built. I for one devoured the legendary engineer’s book, 747: Creating the World’s First Jumbo Jet and Other Adventures, and witnessed from afar the genius woven into that airplane. I would have loved to have talked with Sutter, or Jack Waddell, Boeing’s chief test pilot who took the first 747 on its initial flight on February 9, 1969.

Sutter and Waddell are no longer with us, though their legacy lives on in Boeing’s engineering corps. On the event of the final production unit’s departure from the factory at Everett, I sought out two of the pilots who know the airplane intimately from a more recent viewpoint within flight test operations. I spoke with them about one of the greatest airplanes of all time—and one that will still ply the airways for decades to come.

The Hands of Fate

Curt Gottshall, current engineering chief pilot for Boeing’s 747-8 program, and Kirk Vining, a former engineering project pilot on the 747-8 freighter and intercontinental passenger programs, both had an early connection with the airplane that would play out in in- credible ways over their careers.

For Vining, it was on his first flight lesson, just after takeoff with an instructor out of Anchorage International (PANC), seeing the 747 on climb out come under the wing as he tried his first left turn. For Gottshall, it was during his freshman year at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, when he set the lock code to his briefcase to “7-4-7.”

Vining took the desire to become an airline pilot with him to Wichita State University in Kansas, where he studied aeronautical engineering in pursuit of the four-year degree required to fly for the airlines at the time. But that degree led him to an internship and then a full-time role with local OEM Learjet as an engineering flight test pilot. There he had his first con- tact with FLYING too: “I hold a world record with Mac McClellan. He and I and Pete Reynolds flew the Lear- jet 31A from Aspen, Colorado, to Washington, D.C., [featured] in the November 1994 FLYING magazine. I have a little cameo in there—you can see my picture in the flight deck leaning forward trying to get my face in the photo.”

The experience in Part 25 certification testing set him up well to join Boeing in 2005. “The Learjet, though it’s small, the performance isn’t all that different than a 747,” says Vining, who noted that a couple of airlines have flown Learjets in the past with flight decks set up like that of the 747 to use in training their pilots.

First Contact with the Queen

Vining recalls well his first flight in any 747 model: “[It was] actually in the Large Cargo Freighter (LCF, also known as the Dreamlifter), the one that carries around parts for the 787. The pilot mentoring me on my first takeoff said, “Don’t worry, the LCF flies just like a 747”—but at that point, I hadn’t even flown a 747, so how was I supposed to know? After gaining more experience, I found the Large Cargo Freighter did fly like a 747-400. When we built the 747-8, we dialed it in to fly like the models before it as well.” Vining conducted the first flight of the second 747-8 to roll out of the factory.

Gottshall came to the 747 Classic models from the operations side before coming to Boeing. As a contract pilot for Japan Airlines, he transitioned from the McDonnell Douglas DC-10-40 as a captain, noting the differences between the DC-10 and the -100s, -200s, and -300s that JAL was flying at the time. “With the implementation of body gear steering [in the 747], the oversteer required—even though it’s longer, bigger, and with a higher stature—wasn’t quite as much as that required on the DC-10” to line up accurately on the runway centerline.

During his tenure with JAL, he also operated the 747 into airports that required a circling approach, such as Fukuoka International (RJFF), which at the time only had an ILS to one runway end. “Most folks with trans-port category type ratings have a ‘no circling’ limitation,” says Gottshall. “That wasn’t good enough for the [Japanese Civil Aviation Board] because they actually used [the circling approach]. So we had to go set up a syllabus to do the training. I believe it was in Washington Dulles where we could actually do an approach, keep it in sight, and do the whole FAA demonstration so that we didn’t have that limitation on our license when we went back to Japan.” Gottshall recalls that the 747 handled the approaches quite well.

Graceful Flight Characteristics

Indeed, pilots who have flown the 747 relate that she’s a gentle giant, with relatively benign handling characteristics at low speeds, as well as surprising maneuverability for an aircraft with such mass and such a long wingspan—225 feet for the 747-8.

“I tested high speed and low speed in the 747-8, and demonstrated full aerodynamic stalls,” recalls Vining. “It stalls at full aft stick even better than a Cessna 172. It’s an amazingly light and flexible airplane for its size, so we designed the fly-by-wire ailerons [in the 747-8] to automatically help dampen out any vibrations and smooth out the ride.”

Gottshall agrees. “The 747—even at that large of a mass—is very maneuverable, so you have quite a large operational window. People think that you have to plan hundreds of miles in advance—it is true that if you want to have a perfect, steady trajectory, you need to think ahead. But it does have the capability and the maneuverability to make corrections and make them fairly aggressively. With the exception of the last thousand feet on the approach; you don’t want to be aggressive—you want to stay in that stabilized approach criteria.”

The primary difference between the flying that test pilots do against what pilots flying the line experience lies in the exploration of the flight envelope—on purpose. Gottshall compares it directly to his operational flight time. “When we go out and do things with flight test—especially post-production—we test to make sure that everything works, all of the relief systems work, all of the indication systems work, and things like that, which are [procedures] that we try very hard to stay away from in operations. [In normal ops] you don’t want to hear the overspeed warning come on, or you don’t want to see the load relief on the flaps. You plan and operate in a manner to try and stay away from all those things.

Truly Fond Memories

Gottshall notes that while the 747 is no longer in production, his role on the program continues, with work on continuous improvements to the 747-400 and 747-8, including a checklist of updates on the horizon.

The first jumbo jet will continue to fly on with the regular work made by the engineering teams to improve it.

As to what stands out to him the most about the 747, Vining sums it up well. “There’s so many things,” he says, “but whether it’s the feeling that you’re taxiing around in a three-story apartment building, or just the stall characteristics. It’s just such amazing performance, gentle behavior—and what a capable machine.

The 747 and the Last Flight Engineers

The lack of a globally connected, extensively reaching supply chain during the height of the 747’s operation in the 1980s and ‘90s meant that the flight crew’s navigator/engineer was an engineer in the British sense — a maintenance chief critical to keeping the aircraft engines and other systems healthy during its long-haul trips to Asia, Africa, and Australia.

Capt. Stephen Yeates, who flew the Classic -100, -200, and -300, and the -400 for British Airways during that period, recalls regular instances when the engineer truly enabled the show to go on.

“We lost a windshield piece to a bird strike over Pakistan and made an emergency landing in Karachi, which was an outstation at the time with little on-site maintenance capability. If we didn’t have the engineer on board, we would have been waiting far longer to get back underway.” Advances in technology also have played a significant role. “Nowadays, you have Rolls-Royce or GE monitoring engine performance from the ground, as opposed to the engineer along with you, always fiddling with the engines to keep them running perfectly,” says Yeates with a fondness for the incredible knowledge those engineers possessed.

Indeed, respect for the engineer runs across the board of those pilots we interviewed. Something’s lost, says Gottshall, in not having the deep knowledge that the engineer provided, and the extra mind to put to the task in the event of a complex abnormal or emergency situation. As it was with British Airways, “in Japan, there were professional flight engineers,’ recalls Gottshall. “They had been in that position for 20 or 25 years and knew every single possible piece of that airplane, right down to the nuts and bolts.”

“I’m just so privileged to have been able to share those years with it,” he concludes. To a pilot, the fond feelings for the 747 remain—and the opportunity to fly the jet goes on, we hope for decades to come.

New Route to Connect Sicily and New York With Nonstop Flight

Neos Air unveils its plans for seasonal Palermo-New York flights starting June 2024, marking a significant expansion in its international routes.

The Italian skies are set to witness a historic revival. Neos Air, the Italian airline based at Milan Malpensa Airport, is ready to bridge the United States and Southern Italy with a seasonal connection. Starting in the summer of 2024, Neos Air plans to schedule a bi-weekly flight between Palermo and New York-JFK, as most recently reported by industry watchdog Enilria.

This route, which Alitalia last operated until the mid-1970s with the Boeing 747, symbolizes a return and an expansion of the current offerings to New York, primarily focused on three frequencies from Milan Malpensa. The planned flights, operating with the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, are set for Tuesdays and Sundays, departing from Palermo International Airport (Punta Raisi) at 11:25 and landing at JFK Airport at 14:50 local time. The return flights from New York are scheduled for Saturdays and Mondays, taking off at 17:00 and arriving in Palermo early the following day.

A Revived Connection

The announcement of this new route came after the intentions to re-establish the connection between the Sicilian capital and the Big Apple were made public in May by Vito Riggio, CEO of Gesap, the company managing Punta Raisi Airport. Initially, there were discussions with United Airlines to operate the route. However, Neos Air recently announced its intention to take on the connection.

The first flight is slated for Sunday, June 9, 2024. Currently, the tickets are being sold at competitive prices, with the Economy promo fare offering standard seating, an eight kg cabin baggage allowance, and meals. The airline aims to transport approximately 20,000 passengers during the summer of 2024, as per Carlo Stradiotti, CEO of Neos Air. This new connection is a significant development opportunity for leisure and business travel between Italy and the United States. The last seasonal flight will be scheduled on September 27, 2024.

Moreover, this venture isn’t limited to passenger travel. Neos Air also intends to use this route for cargo transportation, offering up to 10 tonnes of cargo capacity per flight. This diversification into cargo transportation, which gained momentum during the pandemic, marks strategic growth for the airline in terms of volume and revenue and in expanding its range of products and services.

This ambitious plan by Neos Air represents a significant step in the airline’s ongoing growth strategy, showcasing a commitment to enhancing connectivity and providing diverse travel and transport options.

Starting off on three aircraft during the 2017 unveiling, the new livery was designed by international design firm Winkreative, headed by Canadian entrepreneur Tyler Brûlé. Since then, several of Air Canada’s mainline and regional aircraft have been painted with the new scheme. Air Canada has nearly 200 aircraft in its mainline fleet.

Keeping the Maple Leaf

At the heart of Air Canada liveries for decades has been the maple leaf, an emerging symbol of national identity in Canada. The icon can be found on Air Canada tails dating back to the DC-8 aircraft in the 1960s. As the company has evolved, so has the maple leaf.

The maple leaf continues to stand out on the 2017 iteration of the carrier’s livery. In this design, it is encircled in red on a black tail, creating a more eye-catching appearance. The so-called ‘Rondelle’ made a return to the 2017 livery after a 24-year-long absence. In the previous design, the maple leaf was larger on a lighter background.

“For the first time in many years, the Air Canada Rondelle has been reintroduced on the tail, re-establishing the confidence and heritage of our brand,” the company shared in a detailed description of the new livery.

Complementing the tail, a single Rondelle is on the inside of the bold black engine design of some aircraft, including the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. A red Rondelle is also on the bottom of each aircraft.

A Far Cry from Earlier Liveries

The current version of Air Canada’s livery was a pivot from the previous design, incorporating darker colors across the aircraft. The bottom portion of the livery is black while the rest – except the tail – is white. This creates a more modernized look and allows for some of the red accents to appear bolder.

“Air Canada’s new livery signals a pivotal inflection point in our 80-year history,” said Benjamin Smith,” the company’s President of Passenger Airlines said at the 2017 unveiling event in Toronto.

The airline says its livery “…balances national identity with a compelling design that clearly accentuates the features of each aircraft, allowing it to elegantly stand out in the sky and on the runway.”

Largely unique to Air Canada, the newest livery also features a dark mask around the flight deck. The mask was inspired by the facial markings of Canada’s indigenous birds, according to the airline.

United Adds Service From Four U.S. Markets to Brand-New Airport

In Summer 2024, United says it will have up to five daily flights to the new airport. Flights on the carrier’s new services will be available on Nov. 18, 2023.

Following American’s recent announcement that it would add service to Tulum last week, United is hopping on the bandwagon. The Chicago-based airline is planning to start new service from three U.S. markets on March 31, 2024 before adding a seasonal route in May.

Located nearly 75 miles south of the larger Cancun International Airport, Tulum will be the region’s newest airport, which is slated to begin domestic operations in December. In addition to Aeromexico and Viva Aerobus, Spirit, Delta, and American have all announced service to the brand-new airport.

United’s New Tulum Routes

On Friday, United announced that it will offer 22 weekly nonstop flights to Tulum from Newark, Houston, and Chicago beginning on March 31, 2024. Both American and Delta are slated to begin their new routes to Tulum on March 28.

Tulum’s Longest Flight Yet

Along with its new routes to Newark, Houston, and Chicago, United is adding a seasonal flight between Tulum and Los Angeles. This route is scheduled to begin on May 23, 2024 and will be a daily service.

Tulum-Los Angeles will be the airport’s longest flight yet, just over 100 miles more than Viva Aerobus’ Tijuana route.

With over four decades of experience in the aviation business, it becomes evident that there are always noteworthy headlines and events shaping the airline industry. If you’re contemplating a career in aviation, understanding this constant state of flux is crucial.

Herb Kelleher, the former CEO of Southwest Airlines, aptly captured this in his famous quote: “You can’t have a midlife crisis in the airline industry because every day is a crisis.”

Kelleher’s statement holds a valuable lesson – resilience is paramount in this field. Every day, something significant is bound to happen, and you need to be prepared for it. The industry has evolved, and today, aspiring pilots have access to a wealth of information, unlike in the past when it was challenging to make informed decisions. But, even with this wealth of information, one fundamental question remains: Do you have the resilience, the “thick skin” required for this industry?

In this article, we’ll delve into the current aviation dilemma, explore what lies beneath the surface, and understand why resilience is a critical attribute for those considering a career in aviation.

The Current Challenge: Pratt & Whitney’s Engine Issue

Recently, RTX, the parent company of Pratt & Whitney, announced a rare condition in the powder metal used to manufacture certain engine parts for PW1100 GTF engines. This issue will necessitate the removal of approximately 600 to 700 engines from service for shop visits between 2023 and 2026, with a majority of these removals taking place by early 2024.

Now, reading between the lines is essential here. These engines were designed to revolutionize the airline industry, as they offer exceptional efficiency and cost savings in fuel consumption. However, a design flaw has come to light, resulting in the grounding of around 300 airplanes. This predicament affects several major U.S. airlines like JetBlue, Spirit, and Hawaiian, as well as European carriers.

Grounded airplanes impact profits, and airlines are already reeling from post-pandemic losses. Furthermore, there is a pilot shortage, adding another layer of complexity. A shortage of pilots hinders growth and profitability. Resilience, in this context, means understanding that crises like these are normal in the airline industry and being prepared to weather them.

The Hidden Dilemma: Pilot Shortage and Aircraft Scarcity

The storm of a pilot shortage and aircraft scarcity is brewing. Airlines that operate affected aircraft types will likely cite this situation as a credible excuse for poor profit scenarios. This can consume airline management teams, diverting their focus from growth strategies. It’s an opportunity disguised as a crisis, but it requires resilience to perceive it as such.

Airlines may resort to knee-jerk reactions like slowing down growth, ordering, or hiring and more importantly pulling out of certain markets in an effort to stop the bleeding. If hiring slows down, the already limited pool of available pilots may quickly be snatched up by competing airlines. Another option is incentive lines, where pilots are paid to stay home on reduced pay, might also be considered. This option may sound good to some pilots who want to reduce their flying but it does have a compounding effect on the rest of the airline.  Resilience means understanding that these situations are part and parcel of the industry and remaining steadfast in your career goals.

The Byproducts of Industry Challenges

Besides the immediate challenges, there are byproducts to consider:

Byproduct #1

Most collective bargaining agreements (pilot contracts) include profit-sharing scenarios. These agreements should ideally protect pilots, but creative accounting can sometimes affect profit-sharing payouts.

Byproduct #2

Airlines often have union groups to manage crises, and this can be a time-consuming and emotionally charged process. When unions are addressing one thing, other items often get no attention. Resilience helps you keep a cool head.

Byproduct #3

Morale can take a hit when airlines face challenges. The airline’s culture and employee satisfaction can suffer. Resilience is vital in maintaining your professional identity and coping with the emotional rollercoaster.

In today’s world, stress and tension can take a toll on individuals both at work and in their personal lives. It’s essential to care for one another and understand how crisis management can affect our careers as pilots. More important is removing the element of surprise.  Well-informed pilots are better able to handle these scenarios even if they are just starting out in their careers.  In this ever-changing industry, having thick skin is not a choice – it’s a necessity.

Boeing 787 Arrives in Antarctica

The flight departed from the airline’s Oslo base on November 13 and made a 40-hour long stop in Cape Town, South Africa, before embarking on the Antarctic leg.

Norse Atlantic Airways has made history by becoming the first airline to land a Boeing 787 Dreamliner in Antarctica. With the apt flight number N0787, the aircraft – named “Everglades” – touched down at Troll Airfield (QAT) on Wednesday, November 15 at 02:01 local time. This marks one of the largest-ever charter aircraft to operate to the desolate continent, a close contender to Hi Fly’s A340-300.

The flight departed from the airline’s Oslo base on November 13 and made a 40-hour long stop in Cape Town, South Africa, before embarking on the Antarctic leg.

Contracted by the Norwegian Polar Institute and Aircontact, the charter mission transported 45 passengers, including scientists from the Norwegian Polar Institute and other countries, as well as 12 tons of research equipment to the remote Troll research station in Queen Maud Land, Antarctica.

Bjørn Tore Larsen, CEO of Norse Atlantic Airways, said in a press release: “It is a great honor and excitement on behalf of the entire team Norse that we have achieved together a momentous moment of landing the first 787 Dreamliner.”

Landing on Ice

Antarctica lacks paved runways, so the carrier’s 787 landed on a nearly 10,000-foot-long “blue ice runway” at Troll Airfield. The Norwegian Polar Institute operates the research station, which is located in Jutulsessen in Queen Maud Land, approximately 146 miles inland.

The use of the Dreamliner for this mission is expected to have several benefits, including reduced emissions, improved logistics capabilities, and better cargo capacity. Camilla Brekke, Director of the Norwegian Polar Institute, said that the use of the Dreamliner “can help reduce overall emissions and the environmental footprint in Antarctica.”

Daniel Carey, an air broker and spokesperson for Aircontact, the oldest air brokerage firm globally, said that the Dreamliner’s large cargo capacity makes it “perfect for these flights.”

Paul Erlandsson, a Field Service Representative from Boeing, said in a press release: “The 787 Dreamliner stands out for its exceptional fuel efficiency, enabling a round-trip flight from Cape Town to Antarctica without the need for refueling.”

Numerous Milestones

The successful landing of the Dreamliner in Antarctica is a first-of-its-kind mission for Norse Atlantic Airways, which is a European start-up offering low-cost transatlantic flights. Not only a milestone for Norse, but also for Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner, testing its capabilities in a challenging operating environment.

After just over four hours on the ground in Antarctica, LN-FNC returned back to Cape Town where it will eventually reposition to Europe.

“In the spirit of exploration, we are proud to have a hand in this important and unique mission. It is a true testament to our highly trained and skilled pilots and crew, and our state-of-the-art Boeing aircraft,” Larsen added.

Allegiant to Add Orlando (MCO) After Decade-Long Hiatus

Allegiant will begin operations out of Orlando International Airport in May 2024, expanding out of the carrier's large Sanford base.

Ultra-low-cost carrier Allegiant is well known in Florida. The leisure carrier currently has five crew bases in the state of Florida and operates a point-to-point route structure. A predominant portion of the carrier’s Florida operation is out of Orlando Sanford Airport (SFB). The ULCC carrier dominates the airport north of the city. However, the carrier is shaking up its Orlando presence, announcing new flights from the area’s larger airport, Orlando International, in the spring of 2024. 

As first reported by Enilria.com, Orlando Sanford Airport is going through a rough patch with the airport operator, who was dismissed by the airport’s board of directors. Being one of two air carriers to operate at the airport, Allegiant is largely susceptible to issues that may arise due to this change in operation. 

Orlando International Airport

A press release from the Las Vegas-based carrier shows the airline will operate three routes to Orlando International beginning in May 2024. The airline will launch flights from Asheville to Orlando beginning May 3. Flights from Allentown’s Lehigh Valley International Airport and Knoxville’s McGhee Tyson Airport will follow on May 16 and 17 respectively. All three routes will be operated twice weekly. Asheville and Knoxville will see service to Orlando on Monday and Friday, while the carrier will operate from Allentown on Thursday and Sunday. 

This will be the first time Allegiant has served Orlando International Airport since January 2011.

Allegiant will join a multitude of other low-cost carriers operating out of Orlando International Airport, including Southwest who just added several new international flights. The current schedule for May and Summer 2023 still shows Sanford holding onto routes to the three eastern United States cities. In addition, the airline is adding a new route from Orlando Sanford to Rapid City, S.D. in May 2024.

The Nevada-based carrier’s route structure is created upon day trips for crews. This means crews begin and end their days in their respective bases. Asheville, Allentown, and Knoxville are all crew bases for Allegiant along with Orlando Sanford. The flight schedule has been built with turn times of 50 minutes in Orlando International, leading to believe the flights will be staffed by crews from the three bases, not crews from nearby Orlando Sanford. 

The low-cost carrier will join 41 other airlines operating out of Orlando International. Based on December 2023 schedules, Frontier will operate from Orlando International to McGhee Tyson three times weekly, however, the other two cities will not see service to the Central Florida destination. 

More New Routes

While Orlando (MCO) is the only new airport in the carrier’s Thursday route announcement, it is adding a handful of other new routes. Starting in Spring 2024, Allegiant will bolster its network in 22 cities. These routes include:

  • St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) to Bismarck Airport (BIS) – beginning on May 15, 2024
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Billings-Logan International Airport (BIL) – beginning on May 16, 2024
  • Nashville International Airport (BNA) to Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD) – beginning on May 16, 2024
  • Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) to Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (CHA) – beginning on May 16, 2024
  • Punta Gorda Airport (PGD) to Dulles International Airport (IAD) – beginning on May 16, 2024
  • Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Appleton International Airport (ATW) – beginning on May 17, 2024
  • Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) – beginning May 17, 2024
  • Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) to Eugene Airport (EUG) – beginning on May 31, 2024

All routes are presumed to be operated by Airbus A320 aircraft based on current information from the airline’s website. The low-cost carrier will begin taking delivery of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in 2024.
